Hollywood got bested one out of three with the debut of The Social Network, Case 39, and Let Me In. The pair of horror films landed below the halfway mark with neck and neck numbers while the critically acclaimed Facebook based drama took the top spot. The Social Network is the latest film to match critical acclaim with commercial success. It easily overtook second and third place finishers with $23 million in its first weekend.

Like The Social Network? Try Pirates of Silicon Valley

David Fincher’s fantastic The Social Network opened this weekend, sporting an impressive 98% Fresh rating on www.rottentomatoes.com and turning the story of Mark Zuckerberg and the creation of Facebook into a tense, well-acted drama. The Information Age has provided us with the world’s youngest billionaires, an updated and revolutionary way of communicating with each other, and a new source of contemporary drama at the movies. The Social Network isn’t the first or the last one of these, though it just might be the best.

The Social Network Review

The Social Network, however is not some insouciant attempt to capitalize on the world’s most popular social networking site for revenue purposes. It is a loaded drama that unlike most based-on-true stories, is a bit unforgiving of its “protagonist” (or anyone else for that matter) and unafraid to handle the unflattering side of human nature. Check the idea of this being a “Facebook movie” aside; this is the story of what can happen in today’s age when an arguably stolen idea can be born at a frat party and turn into a $25-billion-dollar property in fewer than 10 years.

Let Me In Review

When done effectively, remakes can act as a tribute to the source material while providing different interpretations in various ways. Let Me In, the remake of the 2008 Swedish film Let the Right One In, for all of its faults, is one of those remakes doing more good than bad, but still not enough to match its predecessor.
