Upstaged: Scene Stealing Performances from Supporting Actors

There are great actors that can take an ordinary role and turn it into something magical. And there are characters so well-written that they can make any actor look good. Angelina Jolie is the only good thing about Girl, Interrupted. And Haley Joel Osment could have made a career out of his tender and terrified turn as Cole Sear in The Sixth Sense. Sometimes a studio picks just the right actor and sometimes it’s the guy in front of the lens that got lucky. The Fighter seems to be a combination of strong writing and adept acting.

Let Down By This Weekend’s Movies? Try Something Totally Different

I’m one of the four people on this planet who didn’t read C.S. Lewis’ books as a child. I wasn’t averse to the tales, I just was attracted to other popular children’s stories, things like Dante’s Inferno, Ulysses, and the works of Tucker Max. As such, when the film of The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe hit theaters, I didn’t really care. I have no doubt it’s a good movie; based on what I hear, it’s pretty swell. The sequel that just opened on Friday, The Voyage of the Dawn Treader, has a similar effect. I don’t know much about it, other than it has a 50% “rotten” rating on the Tomatometer and that there’s about a 3% chance I’ll see it sometime. It appears The Tourist is even less popular despite everything it has going for it. These facts lead to the same conclusion:

“Dawn Treader” sinks, “The Tourist” trapped

The “Chronicles of Narnia” series came to an unfortunate end this weekend. The franchise that launched in 2005 with “The Lion, The Witch, and The Wardrobe” burned out with “Voyage of the Dawn Treader.” The third and final entry tallied $24.5 million in sales with just over 54% of sales from 3D viewings. Disney smartly dropped the series after two installments when “Prince Caspian” made less than half its predecessor’s gross. Fox assumed it could turn the series into a hit, but “Voyage of the Dawn Treader” made less than half the opening weekend business of “Prince Caspian.”

The Chronicles of Narnia: Voyage of the Dawn Treader Review

Everything you would want or expect from a fantasy is here: sword fights, dragons, magic, legends, strange creatures, wizards and a quest into an unknown territory. The adventure was light-hearted and there is a great amount of humour. The cinematography and set designs are bright and colorful and this is a perfect film to take children to.
