Like Black Swan? Try Eyes Wide Shut

This week, at least for me in my podunk city, Black Swan finally made its debut, and it blew me away. Darren Aronofsky’s story of a ballerina obsessed with perfection totally immersed me in its world. Natalie Portman’s performance should lead to her first Oscar, and deservedly so. If you haven’t seen it yet, go now. I give it my highest recommendation. For those of us who have, and enjoyed it, you might consider a film I was reminded of following my screening of Black Swan, Stanley Kubrick’s last film, 1999’s Eyes Wide Shut.

“Tron Legacy” lights up the marquee

Tron Legacy made money this weekend, despite hesitant reviews and weak source material. “Legacy” added $43.6 million to the box office grid state side; another $23 million was raised overseas. But $66.6 million is a long ways to paying back a $170 million production budget (and that does not include the massive marketing campaign). As a technical marvel and stylistic art project emphasizing light, color, sound and symmetry mixed with all kinds of action, “Legacy” shines.

The Fighter Review

David O. Russell has earned himself a right to an Academy Award nomination for The Fighter. This is not just another Rocky wannabe. It is a story about a man growing up and apart from his family. Marketing hides the roles characters Charlene and Alice will play in the film, along with the depth of Dicky’s troubles. This is a major win for the audience because it results in a bevy of pleasant surprises.

Movie DiaBlog: Will the “Tron Legacy” continue?

Whether you specifically asked for it or not, Tron: Legacy is the blockbuster centerpiece of the holiday season. Disney has sunk hundreds of millions in making this follow-up to the cult-classic 1982 film the hit it believes it can be. Naturally, there’s some doubt as to whether the Mouse House can pull this off. We (Steven and Max) weigh in on the film looking to ignite the dork in all of us.
