A Look at the Original True Grit (1969)

It’s a somewhat rare occasion to get to look at the same story through the lens of two different filmmakers, and even rarer to get an opportunity when both films are good. Between the two movies, the plots are virtually the same, as is most of the dialogue. It’s the choices those involved make that give each film its own idiosyncrasies (obvious sentence is obvious.)

True Grit Review

All in all, the film is good, but I expected more. I suppose being as good as filmmakers as the Coen Brothers is a double-edged sword. With such incredible additions to American cinema, people (like me) sort of expect them to hit a home run everytime. I’d say it’s one of the weaker Coen films. The bright side to that is that those are still pretty damn good.

Making Family Films Focking Funny

Who ever thought a film about a nurse named Gaylord Focker meeting his future in-laws, one of whom is ex-CIA, would ever pave the way for a comedy trilogy? The simple idea to capitalize on the tension of the in-law relationship made Meet the Parents a hit with audiences back in 2000 and consequently its sequel, Meet the Fockers, holds the box-office record for most successful live-action comedy of all time (though “The Hangover” gave it a scare).

Eric Bana could play Abraham Lincoln … the vampire hunter

TheWrap is reporting that Australian Eric Bana is being courted to play Lincoln in another Lincoln-centered project: Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter based on the novel of the same name by Seth Grahame-Smith. Grahame-Smith adapted the screenplay, which was just recently featured on the 2010 Black List (and that’s a good thing).

Alfonso Cuaron’s long in-development project suffered a setback when its male lead, Robert Downey Jr., dropped out of the project. Now, Deadline reports that George Clooney has been confirmed to replace Downey Jr. and play opposite Sandra Bullock in the 3-D sci-fi film Gravity.
