Andy Serkis, Ian McKellen confirmed for “The Hobbit”

In news that should surprise nobody for all the right reasons, Deadline has it that Andy Serkis, the burgeoning godfather of motion capture acting, will reprise the role of Gollum for his “Lord of the Rings” director Peter Jackson in the upcoming two part “Hobbit” project. Hot on the heels of this announcement, The Hollywood Reporter reports that Ian McKellen, who after years of expressing his desire to make the project, has finally put pen to paper for the prequel films.

“Witch” crushed by western, “Country Strong” is weak

Another slow weekend passed at the box office. But every dark cloud isn’t without its silver lining; True Grit overtook Little Fockers as the number one movie in the nation. Jeff Bridges one eyed Marshall Cogburn struck up $15 million taking the Coen Brothers’ western past the $100 million milestone. Ben Stiller’s humorless sequel managed $13.7 million. New entries Season of the Witch and Country Strong sputtered in with rather underwhelming results.

Country Strong Review

Gwyneth Paltrow blends strength and insecurity into a tall delicious drink and Garrett Hedlund is the slice of lime that brings it all together. But a good cast cannot always save a movie, and in this case it doesn’t. Feste makes a decent attempt at drama but errs tragically in the narrative, character development and pacing.
