The prequel to the Alien films is in the pre-production stages, and 20th Century Fox wants Charlize Theron to play the film’s leading character Elizabeth Shaw. However, it still looks like she’ll star in Snow White and the Huntsman.
It is a week of adaptations, including four novels, an autobiography, a biography and a horror remake. There is something for everyone, three true stories, a revisionist Western, a crime epic, a documentary, a foreign offering and some CGI wolves.
In news that should surprise nobody for all the right reasons, Deadline has it that Andy Serkis, the burgeoning godfather of motion capture acting, will reprise the role of Gollum for his “Lord of the Rings” director Peter Jackson in the upcoming two part “Hobbit” project. Hot on the heels of this announcement, The Hollywood Reporter reports that Ian McKellen, who after years of expressing his desire to make the project, has finally put pen to paper for the prequel films.
There are a couple of films that Nic Cage is in that are watchable, but this is in spite of his presence, not because of it. Nonetheless, since I’m tasked with recommending cinematic fodder in this column, I suppose I will throw at you a couple of Cage movies that I found less than reprehensible.
Another slow weekend passed at the box office. But every dark cloud isn’t without its silver lining; True Grit overtook Little Fockers as the number one movie in the nation. Jeff Bridges one eyed Marshall Cogburn struck up $15 million taking the Coen Brothers’ western past the $100 million milestone. Ben Stiller’s humorless sequel managed $13.7 million. New entries Season of the Witch and Country Strong sputtered in with rather underwhelming results.
Things are looking better and better for Wrath of the Titans by the minute. Actors Edgar Ramirez and Toby Kebbell are negotiating to star in Jonathan Liebesman’s surprisingly promising sequel to the less-than-fantastic Clash of the Titans
Gwyneth Paltrow blends strength and insecurity into a tall delicious drink and Garrett Hedlund is the slice of lime that brings it all together. But a good cast cannot always save a movie, and in this case it doesn’t. Feste makes a decent attempt at drama but errs tragically in the narrative, character development and pacing.
