DVD/Blu-ray DISCussion (New for 5.3.11)

It is another disappointing week of releases. Still the show must go on and The Green Hornet
did have an audience and may offer you an action fix. In the challenge
of international film of the week, Sweden beats France with Smiles of a Summer Night
Back in the 60s The Green Hornet was a popular TV show that started the career of the great Bruce Lee. Now over 40 years later a film adaptation was made. The Green Hornet film project was in development for a long time and many actors and directors were attached to it: Jet Li, Jason Scott Lee (Dragon: The Bruce Lee Story), Kevin Smith, Stephen Chow (Kung Fu Hustle), etc…. Michal Gondry of Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind fame took the role, a job he was first offered in 1997.

Five Movies to Get You Pumped for Summer

The blockbuster season is nigh. That statement can be as foreboding or as hopeful as you wish depending on your appreciation for mind-numbing explosions and excessive FX. Even if you pledge to the former camp and plan on avoiding the multiplex until Awards season rolls around once again, Player Affinity will jump back to five films that should at least get the most jaded of movie-goers into the mood. Superheroes, fast cars and aliens aplenty — this season has them all.

Fast Five Takes the Easy Route to No. 1

The winner of the box office is should be no surprise this week, or the next 16 weekends for that matter. Each tentpole owns its release window with humble counterprogramming thrown in for kicks. That was the case for Fast Five. Justin Lin’s latest take on the series outdid estimates and grossed $83 million over the weekend and more than $3 million in midnight showings late Thursday. The fourth sequel surpassed its predecessors by a cool $13 million. Obviously heists are an improvement over Japanese auto tricks. With another $81 million in overseas tickets we can all look forward to a sixth addition to the franchise.

The Future of The Fast and the Furious

Very few film series manage to reach their fifth installment. Be it because of actor fatigue, lack of inspiration, or a dwindling fan base, somewhere along the way, even the biggest and best franchises fall apart. But not The Fast and the Furious; this Friday, Paul Walker and Vin Diesel will buckle up for another round of crazy street racing. So how did we get to this point? And more importantly, where can this series possibly go from here?

Fast Five Review

In theory, Fast Five should have worked. A series that reaches its fifth entry needs to reinvent itself to keep people interested. Here, the filmmakers have disposed of much of the pointless street racing in favor of a heist-film formula. It’s not a bad idea, but the problem is in the execution. After the explosive and exciting set-up, we’re forced to endure nearly 90 minutes of talky exposition and planning. And as a fan of this series, that’s the absolute last thing I want to see Paul Walker and Vin Diesel doing.

Armie Hammer Might Star in “The Lone Ranger”

Now it seems as if Armie Hammer might be playing Western dress-up with Johnny Depp in Gore Verbinski’s adaptation of The Lone Ranger. Deadline Hollywood relays that Hammer is now in talks to play the titular character in what Verbinski has described as a take on the character’s origin story from Tonto’s point of view, which makes sense with Depp playing Tonto.
