Comedy Sequels: Why History’s Bad News for “The Hangover Part II”

Here’s a trivia question for you: name one first sequel to a pure comedy (the second film in a comedy franchise) that was better than the original. I will give you a few hard returns to think about it. … … … Yup, it’s a trick question. There are none. And that’s a matter of fact, not opinion, at least according to two of the most reputable film rating sites (we’ll get to that later). Not to kill your (or my own) buzz for The Hangover Part II this weekend, but history literally says it will not compare favorably with the original.

Cannes in 60 Seconds: Awards and the Von Trier Fiasco

The Cannes Film Festival concluded its 64th edition on Sunday by awarding its prestigious Palme D’or award to Terrence Malick’s The Tree of Life. The choice wasn’t shocking, though the film’s somewhat mixed response at screenings called into question its chances for the top prize. Malick’s film opens this Friday in limited release, and though Fox Searchlight will undoubtedly milk this accolade for all its worth, word is The Tree of Life is far too obtuse to appeal to mainstream audiences. Yo Ho, Yo Ho! It’s Good to Be a Pirate Overseas

It may be time for the “Pirates of the Caribbean” franchise to walk the plank after all. The newest edition of Jack Sparrow’s endless international and supernatural shenanigans lost steam this time around. Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides made $90.1 million opening weekend, but $24 million less than the last sequel. Despite this, an overseas tally of $256 million is a record, and may push the diminishing domestic franchise toward a fifth installment.

Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides Review

The trailers playing ahead of the Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides offer an inkling of who this franchise’s main audience now is: Zookeeper, Mr. Popper’s Penguins and The Muppets. Given the adventure, the tension and the boldness of the rum-drinking, shaggy-haired Captain Jack Sparrow, one would assume the high jinks of this growing series would take the higher ground of kid-friendly fare. That would be wrong.
