Fast and Furious 6 Review: Quite the Ridiculous Ride

After venturing to the latest high-octane instalment in the blockbuster mainstay franchise with The Fast and the Furious 6 (and finding it to be a cartoonishly delicious action flick) I began to ponder if in the history of film if there was ever a sixth instalment in a franchise to either peak in quality among its later entries or at least maintain its spark. Star Wars springs to mind but that seems like a bit of a cheat considering the format of the instalments as does the simple fact most fans (myself included) feel as if the new entries while very fun in their own rights, pale in comparison to the original trilogy.

Star Trek Into Darkness Review: An Interesting, Arresting Sequel

I was never a Trekkie. I grew up in a time that followed the Star Trek phenomenon as a son who listened to his father speak about how much he enjoyed watching the TV series in the ‘60s and ‘70s. So consider that I, a non-Trekkie, watched Star Trek Into Darkness with my father, an ardent fan, and we both came away from watching J.J. Abrams sequel with positive comments and high regards.

Sightseers Review: An Exercise in Hilariously Dark Restraint

Ben Wheatley’s Sightseers could be one of the most restrained and effective dark comedies ever put to film. So subversive and wry is his approach to both aspects of horror and mirth a less observant eye could view the whole endeavour as a disastrous misfire. But for fans of British humour, those appreciative of generally brave filmmaking and most importantly of slasher movie tropes, this is a little gem unlike anything available so far this year.

Graceland Review: A Dark and Emotionally Gripping Tale That Delivers

Ron Morale’s second feature film is a bold undertaking. It is a bleak and compelling drama that has something to say about the human condition in times of distress.

Iron Man 3 Review: Shane Black hits the Mark

Phase One of the Marvel Universe Cinematic was a massive success for Marvel Studios, leading to a Billion Dollar movie, The Avengers. Now Marvel has a new test for Phase Two, starting with Iron Man 3, with new blood being brought in the form writer/director Shane Black, who manages to import his comedy style to the comic book genre.

The Lords of Salem Review: Lurid, Unimpeded Rob Zombie for Better or Worse

Rob Zombie’s The Lords of Salem isn’t a film I can recommend to anyone. That’s not to say this lurid demonic tale doesn’t have its twisted merits and examples of strong filmmaking from the heavy metal rocker, but I simply don’t personally know a single individual who wouldn’t be either repulsed by what’s on display, generally confused or put off by what Zombie’s dishing out. Personally an avid horror fan and even an admirer of some of the director’s early projects (note: Halloween II was not one of them) The Lords of Salem is the man at his most uninhibited and as such the result is equally deranged.
