Curse of Chucky Review: A Shockingly Efficient Franchise Revival

Often pushed to a second tier among other iconic horror franchises like Friday the 13th, Halloween and Nightmare on Elm Street, the murderous misadventures of Charles Lee “Chucky” Ray have been just as persistent and influential as those other game changing series. But Chucky, so too like Jason, Freddy and Michael, these characters have had their fare share of missteps in terms of quality, and in many cases saw their franchises descend into unintentional self parody.

Machete Kills Review: A Wild Ride

Machete returns to deal out more death and destruction. Robert Rodriguez’s second entry in the planned trilogy isn’t as novel as the first, but still manages to entertain.

Zombie Hunter Review: Plenty of Camp Just Not Much Fun

One of the biggest divides that seems to exist between concept and approach in filmmaking is that of the B-movie – a lark simply meant to amplify camp, kitsch and fun to delirious levels. But what seems to be more often the case is the arrival of flicks which approach the genre superficially, revelling in lazy dialogue, dull slaughter and gore and boring characters rather than applying a grindhouse feel to well though out material.

Day of the Dead Collector’s Edition Blu-Ray Review: Now A Polished Genre Classic

After more than 25 years after its release, there are some things about Day of the Dead that are static in time. Still remaining in director George A. Romero’s classic are the hammy performances. Still present is the silly dialogue. Abundant to this day is a display of astounding practical effects. And ever lasting is an entry in Romero’s cannon that has shaped zombie flicks up to this day. However new to the game with this glorious collector’s edition is a technical re-mastering that polished nearly every facet of this post apocalyptic gore fest and geek-out worthy special features – it’s a crisped up nostalgic treat from beginning to end.

V/H/S/2 DVD Review: A Must See for Horror Fans

For round two, behind each story are better known directors, though of course notoriety isn’t always an indication of talent, their experience behind the camera and in the genre is certainly on display. Returning for another go are Simon Barrett and Adam Wingard who contribute the wrap-around entry and Phase I Clinical Trials respectively, and are joined by Eduardo Sanchez and Gregg Hale (The Blair Witch Project) with A Ride in the Park, Gareth Evans (The Raid) with Safe Haven and lastly Jason Eisner (Hobo With a Shotgun) with the wonderfully titled Alien Abduction Slumber Party.

The Last Tycoon Review: Promising Parts Handled Poorly

Taking us through the Shanghais gangster era of the early 1900’s to the years immediately prior to the Second World War, The Last Tycoon chronicles the familiar story of a scrappy, determined young man who climbs through the ranks of one of the areas most notorious crime syndicates. This is a fascinating place in time where Western garb meshed with that of Asian culture which culminated in a somewhat bizarre mash-up of worlds. It serves as the most compelling facet of this crime thriller. But where the film excels at crafting a crisp presentation of place, its mastery of technical elements and story structure is less honed, leaving us with a film of languishing ideas more than one that uses them to create a uniformly compelling narrative.

Rush Review: Ron Howard Shows What he does Best

The true story of the rivalry between F1 drivers James Hunt and Niki Lauda and the 1976 Formula One season is one of those stories where true life is more extraordinary then fiction. Fortunately two men with great experience at adapting true life stories, Ron Howard and Peter Morgan, have taken this project on, giving us a movie that is about a clash of ideals and personalities as well as about the drive of motor sports.
