Studios are offering last year’s Oscar-nominated breakthrough star Jessica Chastain roles left and right, but she can’t sign on for everything that comes her way. She once negotiated to star in Iron Man 3, but she recently pulled out, pointing to her crammed schedule as the reason for departure.
Matthew Vaughn’s superhero satire Kick-Ass came and went in 2010 but maintained a cult audience. People have been buzzing about a sequel for quite some time, but details on this continuation have been scarce. However, all of that seems to have changed within a matter of hours.
Disney just announced that The Avengers is getting a sequel! OK so all kidding aside, The Avengers getting a sequel was pretty much a given from the start, although raking in $200 million over its opening weekend certainly didn’t hurt its future prospects. Disney CEO Bob Iger made the announcement today, citing the film’s explosive debut as “a great illustration of why we like Marvel so much.”
In recent years, Disney has become increasingly successful in its live-action ventures, such as the “Pirates of the Caribbean” franchise. The Mouse House hopes for its upcoming Maleficent to become a franchise, and with that big-budget property being just two years away, the studio isn’t wasting time assembling its cast.
From the Criterion Collection this week is the Blu-ray re-release of the critical classic La Haine. Like most Criterion re-releases their Blu-ray of La Haine has the use array of documentaries, director commentaries and booklet as well interviews with a trio of sociologists.
It is a real offering of variety this week from the vampire actioneer Underworld: Awakening and Blu-ray box-set of the whole series, the romantic movie The Vow and on the international front movies from Iceland and South Korea. But there is a lack of re-releases with only two other Blu-rays coming out.
