“Nightmare” takes box office in its sleep

The box office can sleep easy now that the spring season is over. Ironically, nightmare slasher Freddy Krueger in A Nightmare on Elm Street were the easy winners this weekend with $32.9 million, helping the box office to a 2.2 percent increase in anticipation of the jolt that will come from Friday’s Iron Man 2.

Box Office Wizard (4.30.10)

One of the goals we have at Player Affinity is to create an open dialog with our readers. I don’t know how many of you there are yet, probably not much, but it’s never too early to start asking for your thoughts and opinions.

One way we thought to do this was through a weekly competition. We want you to get out your box office crystal balls and tells us which five movies will place in the top five of each weekend’s U.S. domestic box office chart. Simple enough, right? I will make my own predictions here and explain them to you each week to give you some sort of reference point. It’s then your job to enter a comment with your top five.

“Anchorman” sequel dies quickly

It happens a lot these days, but I’m about to lose my “write about news that broke on Twitter” virginity. Producer/director Adam McKay tweeted that Paramount has passed on the opportunity to take on an Anchorman: The Legend of Ron Burgundy sequel as we previously reported looking like a go not but a few days ago. One can only assume he’s a bit upset since he broke this news quickly to the public through a medium often used for spreading quick buzz.

No Hobbit until 2013, but Batman 3 by then

Warner Bros. and IMAX Corp. just inked a 20-picture deal to put WB films on IMAX screens through 2013. A joint press release listed The Hobbit as having a 2013 release date, so that confirms the near-certain rumors that “Hobbit” would not meet its projected December 2011 release. Looks like you’ll have to deal with more Hobbit rumors for a couple of years, but take solace, fellow movie geek, “Batman 3” was on this list.

Bill Condon Officially on “Breaking Dawn”

Condon was on a shortlist of three directors along with Gus Van Sant and Sofia Coppola, so Summit was showing ambition with its directorial choices. Condon is a director of independent films and has a wide resumé, from Candyland: Farewell to Fresh to God and Monsters. Condon is best known for the musical hit Dreamgirls and often gets Oscar-nominated performances from his actors.

Anchorman 2 on the Way?

Surprisingly, Anchorman 2 hasn’t already happened yet. You’d think that with Adam McKay’s cult-following, this would be a sure thing. Will Ferrell has said he’d be up for it, and so has most of the principle cast. So what’s been the big hold up?  Money, apparently. In an interview with MTV, McKay lets loose a few details on what’s been holding production back. Here’s the important part…

Ghost Rider 2 speeding ahead minus Nic Cage?

There are a number of reasons why Ghost Rider wasn’t much of a hit back in 2007: the main character is creepy, poor script, relatively unknown character — whatever. Nicolas Cage was probably the biggest draw. If there’s one thing people like to see Cage do most it’s play weird, off-the-wall characters. Despite his assertions that he wants to reprise his role as Johnny Blaze in a sequel, it appears that Columbia Pictures is set to move on without Cage’s participation.

“Dragon” defaults to No. 1

Well, The Losers were big losers and The Back-up Plan was just that for moviegoers this weekend as How to Train Your Dragon won the box office despite last being out five weeks ago and not having been No. 1 since its opening. I have nothing to compare this to except maybe Grover Cleveland being elected to two non-consecutive terms as president of the United States. Somehow, sadly enough, that feels like an adequate association.
