Gore Verbinski speaks about “BioShock” movie

The silver screen adaptation of BioShock, one of the most popular video game titles these days, is not dead yet. Set to be produced by Gore Verbinski (Pirates of the Caribbean) and directed by Juan Carlos Fresnadillo (28 Weeks Later), the film still has life.  At least that’s what we can gather from Verbinski, as he recently sat down to discuss it with IGN. Vampires win bloodless box office victory

The Twilight Saga: Eclipse continued a strong box office trend in the series, though it failed to live up to the success of its predecessor. Eclipse, the third effort in the tween-age vampire love story, brought in a holiday haul of $161 million over five days, with $69 million over the weekend. Also new to theaters, The Last Airbender rustled up nearly $57 million over four days with $30 million in weekend sales. Twilight put a stake in Toy Story, which came in third place with $42.2 million. The Pixar picture has posted $226 million in sales so far.

Andrew Garfield is the new Spider-Man

Director Marc Webb’s Spider-Man reboot for Sony finally has its Peter Parker in American-born British actor Andrew Garfield. The 26-year-old has scored the role of a lifetime ahead of a short list of young men that included bigger names such as Jamie Bell (Billy Elliot), Anton Yelchin (Star Trek), Josh Hutcherson (Journey to the Center of the Earth) and Aaron Johnson (Kick-Ass). Sony revealed the news at an international press conference in Cancun yesterday.

Dominic Cooper signs on for “Captain America”

Mamma Mia! star Dominic Cooper will get to expand his acting chops as he has been confirmed to play a young Howard Stark in Captain America: The First Avenger.

This news comes from the Marvel site itself after rumors circulated the Internet several months ago. Back in March, Chris Evans stepped into the leading role, while Hayley Atwell, Toby Jones, Hugo Weaving, Tommy Lee Jones, and Academy Award nominee Stanley Tucci, among others, have also signed on to take part in the Joe Johnston-directed film.

Toy Story 3 repeated record box office success, holding the number one position with $59.3 million over the weekend. New debut Grown Ups, featuring an ensemble cast of veteran comedic actors, put forth a second place effort of $40.5 million. Knight and Day, a comeback opportunity for the once revered and now frequently maligned Tom Cruise, fell below expectations with $20 million.
