Audience gets friendly with “The Social Network”

Hollywood got bested one out of three with the debut of The Social Network, Case 39, and Let Me In. The pair of horror films landed below the halfway mark with neck and neck numbers while the critically acclaimed Facebook based drama took the top spot. The Social Network is the latest film to match critical acclaim with commercial success. It easily overtook second and third place finishers with $23 million in its first weekend.

Emma Stone offered Mary Jane Watson

Right off the heels of her breakthrough role in Easy A, actress Emma Stone has been offered the role of Mary Jane Watson in Marc Webb’s upcoming Spider-Man reboot. When rumors of Gwen Stacey casting calls first surface the thought was that Watson was being kept out of the first film at least, but it turns out both were written into James Vanderbilt’s script.

“Mad Men” star Jared Harris is Professor Moriarty

With ‘Sherlock Holmes 2’ scheduled for a 2011 release casting news is coming think and fast. But the news that everyone wants to know is who will Holmes’ arch-nemesis Professor James Moriarty. London born actor Jared Harris is set to play the villain, beating the likes of Gary Oldman, Javier Bardem and Daniel Day Lewis for the role. Harris is best know for playing Lane Pryce in AMC’s Mad Men and has had supporting roles in Resident Evil: Apocalypse and The Curious Case of Benjamin Button. This will be the first time that Harris would have a major role in a blockbuster. It shows that Warner Brothers is not taking the easy route of just casting a well known actor whether he is right for the role or not.

Natalie Portman negotiating to star in “Gravity”

Natalie Portman is reportedly “in active negotiations” to take the leading role in Alfonso Cuaron’s sci-fi epic Gravity. At least that’s what The Hollywood Reporter’s Heat Vision Blog is saying. Portman was offered the part shortly after her latest film, the psychological thriller Black Swan, premiered to raves at the Venice Film Festival. If she does take on the part, she will portray a woman in space trying to get back to her family. Robert Downey, Jr. is currently attached to the project.

Michael Nyqvist to play “Mission: Impossible” villain

Michael Nyqvist is set to play one of the primary villains in the fourth Mission: Impossible film. The actor is best known for his role in the Swedish film adaptation of Stieg Larsson’s The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo. Nyqvist will provide a good contrast to the familiar faces if nothing else. Since “Dragon Tattoo” alone wouldn’t have been able to get him this role, expect a showy, scenery-chewing performance. You know, the stuff that makes for a fantastic, memorable villain performance.

“Wall Street” turns a profit, owls not so legendary

“Greed is good” and good thing it’s legal. Oliver Stone received a winning tip for Wall Street: Money Never Sleeps. The sequel opened at number one with $19 million and has already traded $9.1 million in foreign markets. Legend of the Guardians: The Owls of Ga’Hoole isn’t going to be written about in the history books. The 3D animated Zack Snyder entry was a runner up with just $16.3 million.

After long rumours in the media, it has finally conformed that Gary Oldman has been cast as George Smiley in the cinematic adaptation of the John le Carre novel Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy.

To those who don’t know about the work of John le Carre, he is spy novelist who has written novels like The Spy Who Came in from the Cold and The Constant Gardener. His work been adapted and his know for taking a more realistic, understated view on the world of espionage, and made it a polar opposite to James Bond.

Odd Lot Entertainment will produce a film based on Orson Scott Card’s classic dystopian fiction novel Ender’s Game. Just last year Card himself stated that the film might not be happening.
