The Los Angeles Times’ 24 Frames blog has learned that other directors have been approached to take charge of the sequel of the 2009 blockbuster G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra, even though Sommers had been attached to continue with the franchise.
Paramount’s Hansel and Gretel: Witch Hunters has had its Hansel in Jeremy Renner; now it’s time to add Gretel, who will be played by none other than Gemma Arterton. The young actress made a name for herself this year starring in the blockbuster Clash of the Titans, the wannabe blockbuster Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time, and the Stephen Frears film Tamara Drewe and is now looking to hunt some witches in this darker, action-oriented take on the classic Brothers Grimm tale.
Howard has remained fairly tight lipped on the project, but he has opened up to the L.A. Times about what is shaping up to be one of the more ambitious projects out of Hollywood in some time and Viggo Mortensen and Javier Bardem’s names have been attached to the lead role.
It was a lackluster weekend for what should be a blockbuster time period for the movie industry. With no major tentpoles premiering, holdovers trudged into their usually spots on the charts. Lamentable comedy Little Fockers held on to the number one position with $26.3 million in sales. True Grit was a close second with $24.5 million. Tron Legacy is still kicking after a lukewarm start. It crossed $100 million over the holiday week. Paired with international sales the cyber-adventure has nearly made back its $200 million production budget.
As the production date nears for Joss Whedon’s The Avengers film, more and more news (and rumors) are coming to light, true or not. Although it’s known that Iron Man, Hulk, Captain America, Thor, Black Widow, Hawkeye and Nick Fury will all be front and center, no confirmation has come to light on who the Marvel dream team will face off against. This is likely why the fanboy circles are quick to grab onto anything, notably a line from the Albuquerque Journal (quoted by Ain’t it Cool News) in reference to the potential storyline and villains for Whedon’s superhero epic.
Christmas is over for another year and I am sure most of you have been reasonably plumbed with all the festivities. Now that you might be looking for some post-Christmas home entertainment, there are few options in the thriller, horror and martial arts genres, as well as a sprinkling of foreign art house cinema.
Little Fockers did not revive the waning box office. This poorly reviewed comedy came in number one despite its deficiencies. Over the weekend it earned $34 million and came to a five day tally of $48.3 million. It bested True Grit, a critical favorite by a relatively small margin. The western revival earned $25.6 million over Christmas weekend and $36.8 since premiering Wednesday.
TheWrap is reporting that Australian Eric Bana is being courted to play Lincoln in another Lincoln-centered project: Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter based on the novel of the same name by Seth Grahame-Smith. Grahame-Smith adapted the screenplay, which was just recently featured on the 2010 Black List (and that’s a good thing).
Alfonso Cuaron’s long in-development project suffered a setback when its male lead, Robert Downey Jr., dropped out of the project. Now, Deadline reports that George Clooney has been confirmed to replace Downey Jr. and play opposite Sandra Bullock in the 3-D sci-fi film Gravity.
