Shane Black to direct “Death Note” adaptation for Warner Bros.

Writer/director Shane Black will be sitting in the director’s chair for an upcoming English-language adaptation of the popular manga Death Note for Warner Bros. His Doc Savage partners Charles Mondry and Anthony Bagarozzi are writing the script. Black is perhaps most famous for his scripting ventures, particularly his $250K payday for the script for the original Lethal Weapon and The Long Kiss Goodnight, which nabbed him a then-record $4 million.

First official image of Andrew Garfield as Spider-Man

Andrew Garfield became more widely known to American audiences after starring and giving a great performance in The Social Network, but his casting as Peter Parker in Marc Webb’s upcoming Spidey reboot is still being met with skepticism. “Dark Knight” to rise in a new Gotham?

For two movies now, Christopher Nolan has had his Gotham in the form of a CG augmented Chicago skyline. Now, with his latest outing in the “Batman” franchise (as a director, at least), it looks like the Dark Knight may take wing in another city, much to the displeasure of one Chicago resident (hint: he’s writing this article). Reel Chicago is reporting that Chicago has (apparently) lost out to another city as a primary location for filming (which will also take place in L.A., the U.K. and Asia). The kicker is that the Windy City has lost to (wait for it…) Detroit.

“Witch” crushed by western, “Country Strong” is weak

Another slow weekend passed at the box office. But every dark cloud isn’t without its silver lining; True Grit overtook Little Fockers as the number one movie in the nation. Jeff Bridges one eyed Marshall Cogburn struck up $15 million taking the Coen Brothers’ western past the $100 million milestone. Ben Stiller’s humorless sequel managed $13.7 million. New entries Season of the Witch and Country Strong sputtered in with rather underwhelming results.
