On the surface, 3D is dying: revenues are down and two of the biggest hits this year are The Hangover Part II and Fast Five, both in 2D. More people went to see Pirates of the Caribbean: On Strangers Tide in 2D rather than 3D.
Charlie Day is perhaps best known for his work on FX’s acclaimed comedy series It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia. However, with appearances in films like Going the Distance and next month’s Horrible Bosses, he’s slowly but surely making his way on the silver screen. That being said, it looks like he may have signed on for his biggest project yet. Day will have a role as a scientist in the upcoming Guillermo del Toro film, Pacific Rim. The film focuses on people trying to save Earth from violent creatures in the future.
Hugh Jackman did not make his name on playing Wolverine. The Aussie started his career on stage with well-known roles in musicals before injecting his body with adamantium. On film, however, he has not had the chance to show off his singing and dancing skills on film since Oklahoma! in 1999. Well, perhaps that’s about to change.
There was so much back-and-forth about whether or not Sylvester Stallone would direct the sequel to his financially successful all-star action flick The Expendables, but Sly finally made the official announcement that he wouldn’t be directing the film. Instead, the director will be Simon West.
Unlike their real world counterparts in museums all over the world, the dinosaurs of “Jurassic Park” just won’t become extinct. Despite being endangered for 10 years after Joe Johnston’s Jurassic Park III, rumblings of how to make a fourth film or to reboot the franchise have risen once more.
Two years ago, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (the individuals who year after year vote on this little thing called the Oscars) dropped a bomb on everyone by announcing that Best Picture would return to having ten nominees instead of the five to which most are accustomed, harkening back to the old days of Hollywood. Well, they’re not totally happy with that either.
It’s no secret that The Wolverine has had quite a bit of trouble getting off the ground. Darren Aronofsky’s departure in March wasn’t a good sign of things to come, but at long last, this project seems to be making some progress. Both Jackman and Fox have decided that James Mangold should occupy the director’s seat for ‘Wolverine.’ He’ll soon enter negotiations to take over the project.
Crowe is currently negotiating to star as Jor-El, famed biological father of Superman, in the Zack Snyder reboot Man of Steel. Jor-El is one the last major characters to be cast; Amy Adams, Diane Lane, and Kevin Costner are already lined up for big roles while Henry Cavill will play the last son of Krypton.
The Weinstein Company has confirmed in a press release that “Django” will be released on Christmas Day in 2012. This certainly makes the film a more concrete prospect and affirms both Tarantino’s Oscar-winning qualities and ability to make a potential winter blockbuster. It’s a big step up back into the limelight for Tarantino, whose Inglourious Basterds dropped in August of 2009 after the disappointment of his prior film, Grindhouse.
