Julia Roberts is one of Hollywood’s most famous and respected actresses. Whether she’s playing a role or producing, this talent has been lighting up the silver screen for over 20 years. She stars in Ryan Murphy’s upcoming flick Eat, Pray, Love, which is based on Elizabeth Gilbert’s best-selling memoir of the same name. That being said, we at Player Affinity thought it would be proper to honor the actress and countdown Miss Roberts’ top five screen roles.
Men, are your testosterone levels dipping to dangerously low levels? If so you have likely had the release of the new star-studded actioner The Expendables marked crudely on your beer-splattered Playboy calendar for some time now. Directed by and starring action icon Sylvester Stallone, this summer release promises to be a throwback to the campy, over-the-top rumbles of the past few decades.
I’m gonna make you an offer you can’t refuse: watching Trailer Tracker, the feature where we at Player Affinity hunt down the latest trailers like gangsters hunt down a snitch in the witness protection program. You can’t stop our first trailer about a runaway train starring Denzel Washington and directed by Tony Scott. Things then become more low-brow with Jonny Knoxville and gang in Jackass 3-D, sleazier with the musical Burlesque staring Christina Aguilera, creepier with the alien invasion film Skyline and finally more wholesome with the sports comedy The Winning Season. Take the clips, leave the cannoli.
With Scott Pilgrim vs. the World being released to the world this weekend, what better way to celebrate than a top ten that combines two of our favorite media at Player Affinity: movies and comics? Seeing as “Scott Pilgrim” fits the alternative comic “label,” that’s what we’re focusing on today: then ten best alt comic/graphic novel movies.
Time for your weekly BOW. That doesn’t mean bend your knees — it means try your hand at Box Office Wizard. It’s our weekly box office prediction competition. All you’re required to do is predict which five movies will place in the top five of this weekend’s U.S. domestic box office chart.
More so than in any summer that has preceded it, the lovely sunny months of 2010 have shown a growing movement. Ironically, that movement is, well, not to move. The normally booming blockbuster season is wavering in terms of attendance, critical acclaim and audience reception. And those inflated Hollywood budgets could have something to do with it.
Buddy pictures are so ingrained in cinema that the niche could be considered one of the most enduring and successful sub-genres around. The lives of the police force are good fodder for film. They’re more dangerous than the life of a businessman, more realistic than the life of a rock star, and have as many fun clichés to play with as the life of an assassin.
As the latest addition to the Player Affinity staff, it’s my pleasure to head up a new column dedicated to expanding our collective cinematic horizons. The primary purpose of this is just to spotlight a film that you might enjoy based on what’s playing in the theaters at the moment. Domesticated animals have slowly devoured the genre of family films since the ’90s. Even if a movie centers on a family, there’s always a pet. Pets are funny — they cause shenanigans. I wouldn’t be surprised if the word shenanigans was invented in reaction to an act of pet mischief.
