American remakes of foreign films: do we need them?

In recent years, Hollywood has turned more frequently to European and Asian films for material to remake. Many of these films are met by groans of disappointment from fans of the original and those more well-versed in foreign film. In 2010, we have already seen remakes of Death at a Funeral, The Dinner Game and Let the Right One Inwith film fans asking the question, “why?”

Like Jackass 3D? Try CKY

As most of you are aware, Jackass 3D is far from the first of its kind. Most people are familiar with the name made (in)famous by the MTV show in the early double-ought years. What they may not be as familiar with are the videos that preceded it, put together by the then much younger Bam Margera, Ryan Dunn, Brandon Dicamillo, and Raab Himself starting in 1999. With no budgets, or even quality equipment, they devised stunts some of which are still some of my favorites in the ten years that this jackassery has been going on. Trailer Tracker: Blue Valentine, The Way Back and more

Continuing our slow decline of big-name trailers we first look at the clip for Sundance darling Blue Valentine starring Ryan Gosling and Michelle Williams. We then find The Way Back with Colin Farrell, Ed Harris and Jim Sturgess in the prison escape drama. Next is the low-budget remake of the equally low-budget 1970’s thriller And Soon the Darkness and finally, yet again due to a lack of new clips, we take a look at a pissed off Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson in the second clip for Faster.

Like “Life as We Know It”? Try having taste

We’re going to run away from Life as We Know It and the cookie-cutter films of the like, axe the baby and its various discharges (feels weird typing that), and focus on a more interesting and original take on strangers that fate has brought together. That would be Mike Nichols’ Closer of 2004.
