Matthew Vaughn Signs on to Direct Spy Thriller “I Am Pilgrim”
""Kingsman" director takes on a new spy property"
Matthew Vaughn, hot off his loving send up to spy movies,
Kingsman: The Secret Service, has signed on with MGM to direct the film adaptation of screenwriter Terry Hayes' (
Mad Max 2 and
3,
Payback,
From Hell) debut novel
I am Pilgrim for MGM.
From
Variety,
Based on Terry Hayes’ international bestseller, the story follows “Pilgrim,” the codename for a man who doesn’t exist. The adopted son of a wealthy American family, he once headed up a secret espionage unit for US intelligence. Now in anonymous retirement, he is called upon to lend his expertise to an unusual investigation, but ultimately becomes caught in a terrifying race against time to save America from oblivion.
Vaughn will co-produce through his company Marv Films, as he does will all the films he directs, save for
X-Men: First Class, and Hayes will adapt his novel for the screen.
“We could not be more excited to have a consummate filmmaker like Matthew to bring ‘I Am Pilgrim’ to the screen,” said Jonathan Glickman, President of MGM Film Division. “His sensibility, coupled with Terry Hayes’ incredible story, gives us the ideal team to bring this character to the world wide audience.”
While Vaughn is well-known for bringing a lighthearted, often tongue-in-cheek energy to his films, is it yet to be seen if he will bring that style to this film, or try for a more straightforward and serious approach.
