Godzilla Trailer, Awards, and Box Office Puns
Godzilla gets its first trailer!:
The newest incarnation starring Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Elizabeth Olsen, and Walter White is slated for a May 2014 release date! I honestly don’t know if I squealed more when the monster was (sort-of) revealed or when Bryan Cranston’s back showed up.
Film Associations and Critics prove there’s no such thing as an original thought by awarding the same films over and over again:
L.A. Film Critics and Washington DC Area Film Critics Association gave Best Director to Alfonso Cuarón for
Gravity.
12 Years a Slave is acing it, winning best director status for Steve McQueen from the Boston Critics Awards and New York Film Critics Circle Awards. Boston and DC also awarded it Best Film of 2013. NY was brave and awarded best film to
American Hustle. L.A. couldn’t make up it’s mind and called it a tie between
Gravity and
Her. Everyone agrees Cate Blanchett is the coolest ever, and award her Best Actress for her role in Woody Allen’s
Blue Jasmine. Small caveat on L.A.’s side who is indecisive once again and gave best actress to Adèle Exarchopoulos
of
Blue is The Warmest Color as well.
The media fought over who could come up with the best puns:
This weekend’s box office included Lionsgate’s
Catching Fire and Disney Animation’s
Frozen. The two were battling it out for the top spot, with Frozen finally coming out on top after last week’s second place finish. Christian Bale vehicle,
Out of the Furnace is a dud in third place.
1. Frozen
$31.6 million
2. The Hunger Games: Catching Fire
$26.2 million
3. Out of the Furnace
$5.2 million
Meanwhile, trade journals and the internet went out of their way to insert anything temperature related into the proceedings. My favorite pun went to
Variety’s headline: “‘Frozen’ Ices ‘Fire’ in Weekend Showdown; ‘Furnace’ Fails to Gain Any Heat”
