Certainly the wild card element of this year’s Assassin’s Creed title is the intriguing Naval Warfare section. Ubisoft have released a new trailer explaining the details of this new segment.
The new trailer encapsulates everything that this new mode brings to the table, with a beautiful dynamic weather system underlining both the visuals and the gameplay. As Creative Director Alex Hutchison explains, “you can lose sight of your enemies behind large waves and you also need to take into account wave height and position when taking a shot at enemies.” It’s certainly a novel factor, but not likely to be a game changer. Perhaps more interesting are the various types of weaponry that are available to the player. Hopefully the different shot types will actually play a role in strategy; now-archaic Sid Meier’s Pirates featured an intuitive system based around the multi-shot capabilities of ships, here’s hoping Ubisoft can also bring a bit of combat variety.
In terms of new information, Hutchinson revealed that there will be variations of the Naval Warfare, with mine dodging, port raiding and ship boarding levels all featuring to create a sense of variety within the missions themselves. Perhaps the big question stemming from this latest trailer is how will these missions feed in to the main story? It would appear that at least some (possibly all) are story driven much like the Da Vinci weapon segments in AC 2. There’s a chance, however, that they will also be playable as side mission, reminiscent of the base defence mode in Revelation.
