Here is a first look at Karl Urban as Judge Dredd in Pete Travis’ adaptation of the Judge Dredd comic series. Based on the photo obtained from 2000adOnline.com, Moviefone surmises that this film won’t feature “the cartoonish, overly plastic” quality that kept audiences away from the 1995 comic adaptation, which was also named Judge Dredd. That infamous venture in film-making starred Sylvester Stallone in a Razzie Award-nominated performance.
The image is promising, at least indicating that this adaptation won’t resemble the Sly Stallone-starring disaster. Urban hasn’t made much of an impression with his acting yet, but this role just might do the trick. Meanwhile, co-star Olivia Thirlby has more than proven her talents, most notably in the Academy Award-winning comedy Juno.
Dredd is currently set for release in 2012.
