Right off the heels of her breakthrough role in Easy A, actress Emma Stone has been offered the role of Mary Jane Watson in Marc Webb’s upcoming Spider-Man reboot. When rumors of Gwen Stacey casting calls first surface the thought was that Watson was being kept out of the first film at least, but it turns out both were written into James Vanderbilt's script.
In other Spidey news, Deadline reports that four actresses are currently contending for the role of Peter Parker’s first love interest, which is Stacey: Dianna Agron (TV’s Glee), Georgina Haig (Road Kill), Dominique McElligott (Moon), and Mia Wasikowska (Alice in Wonderland). Bryce Dallas Howard played her in Spider-Man 3.
Although Stacy is Parker’s first love interest as mentioned above, Watson is a character who gains importance as the series moves along. Stone is now recognizable enough to be considered somewhat bankable and she will likely have the career longevity to keep that bankability. More importantly, though, she is a very talented actress who could probably play Watson in her sleep. She will be next seen in the drama The Help, a Tate Taylor-helmed drama that focuses on the South in the 1960s, in the leading role.
