Actor Edi Gathegi has joined the cast of Matthew Vaughn’s film adaptation of X-Men: First Class, taking the role of Darwin.
Darwin happens to be the comic series’ first biracial mutant. He has an interesting ability: he can adapt himself based on the environment or situation he is in. For example, he sprouts gills underwater, gains fire retardant skin when he is burned, and has night vision when he is in pure darkness. In the comic, this ability is called “reactive evolution.”
Gathegi has the unique ability to maintain a strong presence and dignity even in small roles and worst case scenarios (case in point: Twilight). Since “First Class” should be anything but a worst case scenario, he should be able to shine brilliantly in the film’s cast that had already included talented actors such as James McAvoy, Jennifer Lawrence, Kevin Bacon, and Alice Eve, just to name a few.
As of now, Gathegi is perhaps best known for his role in Twilight and The Twilight Saga: New Moon as the evil vampire Laurent. He most recently finished work on Paul Johansson’s upcoming film adaptation of the novel Atlas Shrugged.
