Duncan Jones has been on the cusp of directing a big-budget blockbuster for some time now after scoring critical hits with Moon and Source Code. The young filmmaker has just agreed to direct Warcraft for Legendary Pictures.
Jones fills the void left by Sam Raimi, who jumped ship back in July after long being attached to the project. Warcraft has a tightly-wrapped script from Charles Leavitt (Blood Diamon, The Seventh Son) and hopes to start production this fall with a 2015 release date in mind, according to THR.
The film will be a substantial jump in scale for Jones, but the son of David Bowie seems more than capable of rising to the occasion. Warcraft is the biggest multiplayer online RPG that I can name, so the brand recognition suggest it could be a big success, even if its not particularly story-based.
