Dracula: The Company of Monsters #1 Review

Everyone knows that Vampires are the new Zombies, by that I mean they are everywhere from Movies to TV and yes… even comics! They are so infused in comics that even the X-Men are fighting them off while trying not to get bit. With all this vampirism going on it was only a matter of time before an independent publisher threw there hat into the mix, enter: Dracula the Company of Monsters from Boom! Studios. Here’s the thing that this book has going for it that no other Vampire/Dracula story has: Kurt Busiek. You may not know the name but I guarantee you know his work on such books as: Marvels with Alex Ross, Astro City, Superman, Avengers, you name it he’s probably written a notable story for it. So what’s Busiek’s take on the tired genre of Dracula and Vampires? Does it “shine” in today’s over saturated market, or simply lay in the dark.

Top Cow – Witchblade #137 Review

Comic books are a lot like day time soaps in the regards that they never end. Even if there’s no reason for them to continue, because the original story ended or they’ve simply run out of good story ideas. Witchblade is one of those titles that people tend to say, “I’ve never read Witchblade” or “They still put out Witchblade?” That’s because all of the mysteries that were there in the beginning of Witchblade have all been answered. Sure they’ve added more with the 13 artifacts, but that is something that is larger than the title itself.

Magdalena #3 – Review

There continues to be pacing issues with this series which doesn’t make sense with such a simple story line. The basic plot is that the anti-Christ has come to earth and to prevent the rapture and everything biblical; the Magdalena (aptly named Patience) must kill him. Here we are three issues deep and the characters can’t seem to figure this much out. Patience and her male suitor are running around chasing week old leads while demons that have possessed human hosts are given almost the entire issues dialog.

Soldier Zero – Trailer

Some of you are scratching your head wondering how in the world a comic book can have a trailer? Well it’s actually nothing new and you can probably blame Mark Millar and Marvel Comics for the whole thing. Sure it’s a silly idea, but they are effective in communicating information about the product that you may have missed in our preview of the first issue or the several announcements about Stan Lee’s collaboration with Boom! Studios. One thing is for sure, the more they talk about this book the more I want to read it. Not just because it’s from the mind of Stan Lee. In fact it’s mostly because Paul Cornell is writing it and he’s increasingly become the writer to watch in comics. So sit back and enjoy 57 seconds of Soldier Zero!

Avatar Press proudly announces the upcoming release of GRAVEL VOLUME THREE: THE LAST KING OF ENGLAND, the latest graphic novel by long-time collaborative partners Warren Ellis and Mike Wolfer.  Solicited in the September 2010 edition of Previews, this latest chapter sees the violent, bloody conclusion to a story arc four years in the making.

Warren Ellis’ spell-casting soldier finally gets his due in GRAVEL VOL. 3: THE LAST KING OF ENGLAND!  Co-written by industry legend Warren Ellis (TransmetropolitanBlack Summer) and horror maven Mike Wolfer (Night of the Living DeadWolfskin), this third volume draws together the plot threads interwoven throughout the preceding volumes (VOL. 1: BLOODY LIARS and VOL. 2: THE MAJOR SEVEN), leading to a deadly conflict between Gravel’s ragtag team of working class mystics and Bible Jack, a psychotic rogue magician.  However, the madman raining down death on innocent Londoners isn’t Gravel’s only threat, as a more political enemy takes shape on Downing Street.  Collecting issues #15-21 of the monthly series, GRAVEL VOL. 3 perfectly captures all the grit and gruesomeness that inspired its upcoming feature film adaptation from Legendary Pictures!
