Velocity #3 – Review

After waiting for a century in comic book time, Ron Marz has finally written the next chapter of Velocity – and boy was I expecting more from him. Super-speeder Carin Taylor (A.K.A. Velocity) is back with her usual quips, fighting against the clock to save her fellow Cyberforce teammates from a deadly virus her clones infected them with.

Batman #704 Review

This issue turned out to be more impressive than I thought: an interesting story with lots of characters that are written in the perfect way, and even the art had its moment! There are still plenty of things that keep this issue from being perfect, specifically one: Catgirl.

Our caped crusader Dick Grayson meets Sasha Lo in this issue, an interesting new character with an affinity for tights herself.

Lady Death # 0 – The 90’s Called… They Said It’s Over

Upon Boundless Comics – an Avatar Press imprint – announcement that they were bring back Lady Death, I thought “Great she’d be cool to see in our modern story focused comics.” Then I read the issue. Creator/Co-writer Brian Pulido manages to plop Lady Death back into familiar roles, but unfamiliar clothes.

The book opens in the Under Realm with a slave/demon escaping to the Living Realm. He’s on a mission to bring Lady Death a.k.a. Illadra something she’s lost. Meanwhile Illadra and a band of mercenaries are on a mission to save a town’s girl from a castle of cannibals. The band of merc’s is your typical bunch of stereotypes each having a type of weapon that they specialize in that makes them useful to the team.

Heroes For Hire # 1 – Marvel Makes Good on the Third Attempt

There are very few writing teams that manage to be consistently good. Justin Gray and Jimmy Palmiotti are one of the few that have multiple successes as a team and across many publishers, just look at their Radical Comics title Time Bomb. Well another writing team has emerged to show that everything they touch is gold and that team is Dan Abnett and Andy Lanning.

This is not the typical take on Heroes For Hire where Marvel creates a reason for certain heroes to work with a foundation or organizer to be paid for their super-heroing. Instead Misty Knight has organized random heroes to play smaller roles in a larger mission. Each “Hero” has an interest in the particular case that’s being worked which convinces them to play along.

Detective Comics # 871 – Review

Scott Snyder and Jock make their debut into the world of Batman and man ‘o man is it good! Jock’s art is taken to a whole new level and Synder proves why he’s an up-and-coming talent.

Allow me to spoil one thing about this book… its Dick Grayson, not Bruce. If you were expecting Bruce then you’re opening yourself up for disappointment which will ruin how good this book is. That being said the story opens with a young boy being bullied at a swimming pool. After a struggle he switches into a young Killer Croc and bites the bullies hand off.

Buy, Read, Pass – 12/2 Edition

Welcome again to another edition of Buy, Read, Pass. Not as big of a week as last week which gave me a chance to pick up some titles I’d missed the week before. Just to refresh you’re memory this is a review section that runs through everything I read from the previous week. Everything is given a simple rating of buy, read or pass which should be self explanatory, but then there’s skip. Skip is when an issue isn’t really worth picking up when it falls in the middle of a storyline.

THUNDER Agents # 1 – Review

T.H.U.N.D.E.R Agents has a very long history, but has finally come to roost at DC Comics. Don’t let the superheroes on the cover fool you; they aren’t the stars of the book… yet. No instead the stars are the UN agency that’s in charge of Thunder. It follows the people that deal with the red tape and have to write the reports when a mission goes horribly array.

The story begins with one of those missions. Thunder is made of members that all have a codename/job title on the team. Raven has been abducted by Spider – – The evil organization that looks a lot like Hydra or Cobra – – The rest of the team has been sent to rescue him while they send in an undercover agent to bring Raven to the extraction point. Unfortunately for Lightning and Dynamo they’ve been lead into a trap that will cost them their lives.

Witchblade #140 – Advance Review

Emotion abounded in the last issue and this story gives readers some good old fashioned carnage with some great humor and nicely done art. The series in general has a lot to offer and I think this issue helped capitalize on its potential. The pacing issues people have complained about in previous issues of Witchblade are non-existent here as Sara and Patrick are quickly catapulted into a case with interesting new characters to help and hinder their case.
