Batman and Robin #19 Review

After the previous issue of Batman and Robin dedicated its entirety to explaining the Absence’s origin, this issue gets back to the action and our heroes. The story is still great and the artwork has unfortunately remained horrendous, but has its moments.

After a cliffhanger in Batman and Robin #18 the Absence has her hands on Vicki Vale… or is it just an elaborate trap to capture Batman and Robin? Unfortunately for them it turns out to be the latter with Batman and Robin having three minutes to live.

Buy, Read, Pass – DC Edition

It’s been a while and due to the holiday’s I’m a little behind on my reading, but I’ve finally caught up! So this batch is everything DC that I’ve read and expect another two editions as well. Just as a refresher: “Buy” means you should pick up a copy because it’s either an instant classic or just a great book that you should be reading. A “Read” means if you have a friend who bought it then do so, but don’t go out of your way to get it. A “Skip” is for people that are following a certain title, but the issue may be a filler and not worth them picking up. And finally “Pass”, means that you shouldn’t waste your time or money on the book. Now on with the DC books!

Echoes #1 – Review

This comic asks the question, “What if you found out your father was a serial killer?” This book is as chilling as it is good as it dives deep in the psyche of a serial killer and takes you along for the ride. If you have a weak stomach you may want to stick with “Dexter” since this book will probably make you sick.

Brain looks like a normal person. He acts for the most part like a normal person. He has a wife and a new born son and a father with Alzheimer’s. Brian also has a medical condition that causes him to lose control of himself and see hallucinations and hear voices where there are none. He also must take a pill in order to avoid the hallucinations.

Buy, Pass, Read Marvel Edition

Savage Beauty #1 – Review

If you’re looking for a sexy jungle story about two women fighting the crimes of Africa then you’ll only be half right. This story is anything but goofy and uses the comic to look at a very realistic problem in the world, while presenting it in a very accessible way. Simply put this isn’t a kid’s comic, but it’s still really good.

Lacy and Liv are on their way to Africa to cover the Savannah for their magazine. They are two very beautiful women that look fresh out of college and act as such too. Meanwhile, in Africa a French man and his troops raid a UN food supply and murder the villagers. The French man has his way with a young girl as she begs for Anaya to save her. Anaya is a local myth about a female protector that helps the weak and innocent.

The Infinite Vacation #1 – Review

If you’re into ironic live-action in comics, parallel universes or mundane dialog from a character that is not only uninteresting, but boring as well… then I invite you to take the Infinite Vacation. If none of those things interest you because you’ve read it all before then take the issue and seal it away in the hopes that it will be worth something in twenty years when Nick Spencer is writing everything in comics.

Welcome to five comic pages explaining that you shouldn’t take off your name badge, because otherwise you’ll be lost to a life that you may not like. Or otherwise as Mark would say, “The difference between being spanked and spanking.” Then you’ll be greeted with three more pages of photo-shopped images of an actual person pitching the Infinite Vacation app to you. Of course the app is for your iphone 4 (they can travel to parallel worlds now if you didn’t know; it was with the last update that you didn’t do because you were waiting for the jail-broken version). The very creepy gentleman breaks the fourth wall and stares at the reader explaining the world of the Infinite Vacation in his generic sales pitch.

Who Is Jake Ellis #1 – Review

A fast paced spy genre thriller that will leave you asking, “What and who is Jake Ellis?” This book reads like an action-thriller movie and even takes a few queues from the film genre as well. Basically if you want your heart pumping while reading a book, then check it out.

Jon has just botched a job for some very dangerous men. After explaining to them that he was unable to attain all of the information they required he makes a startling get-away that’s fit for any action-thriller in comics or movies. But then the story rewinds and we see Jon, being guided by a man only he can see. We can assume that this is none other than Jake Ellis and he can see briefly into the future to help Jon.

Witchblade #141 Review

In the previous issue of Witchblade, the story and art fell flat when compared to the current Artifacts mini-series. The story was pretty good, though mostly a set up as the first part of the new story arc “Paper Monsters.” In this issue the story still hits the same notes as the last one, but the colors make the art even better than they were before.

Previously, Sara and her partner were attacked by various monsters after interviewing the Neuman children about the murder of the doorman in their building. Now Sara has to take them down while her partner tries to get to the kids that are drawing the creatures and making them come to life. But what will they do with them, if they survive at all…
