Wonder Con Review – Trigger Men: Chapters 1 & 2

One of my favorite things about cons is walking around and picking up independently published comics and giving them a chance. Well Wonder Con was no exception and I picked up several books that were pretty good. I don’t tend to ignore the sales pitch and just pick up random books which usually confuses the creator/seller as they think I know something about the story and that’s why I’m getting the book; but really I’m just treating it as if it were a new title arriving in my comic shop. I look at it a little and then make a decision on if I should buy it or not.

Dracula: The Company of Monsters #8 – Review

After my harsh review of Dracula: The Company of Monsters #7 I expected nothing from the next issue – but the ending of the last issue did intrigue me enough to try this follow-up and I am pleased (and greatly surprised) to report this issue was great! The characters are still slightly bland, but the artwork shows its strengths and the story hits a high point followers of the series have been waiting for! Dracula: The Company of Monsters is a modern spin on the tales of Dracula and other vampires. Evan comes home to discover his mother has been turned and is out for revenge when he finds himself stuck in the middle of the battle between Conrad and Dracula.

Axe Cop: Bad Guy Earth Part 2 Review

When last we saw Axe Cop in part one of Bad Guy Planet, he and his band of heroes were heading back in time to save the dinosaurs.  That mission is quickly accomplished this month, as is always the case with storylines in Axe Cop. The plot races as fast the mind of hyper-active six-year-old, which is because the series is actually written by a six-year-old boy, Malachi Nicolle.  The art is provided by Malachi’s older brother Ethan, who draws exactly what sprigs from his younger sibling’s mind.  This results in things like a whole planet of unicorn people, or dinosaurs who shoot lava out of their mouths; all within a few ages of each other. When you ride along with Axe Cop, you don’t expect calm, deliberate pacing, you just buckle up and enjoy it.

Nonplayer #1 – Review

It’s been a while since I started off a review talking about the art of a book, but that’s exactly where I will begin with Nonplayer. The pencil’s and color are breath-taking. They are so beautiful that the story and dialog become almost an annoyance while reading it. The different character designs and just the designs in general are very cool and different than a lot of comics. The coloring gives the book a very realistic look with perfectly colored forest canopies and a very animated look to it. Think Spirited Away, but more so for adults.

Blue Estate – Episode 1 Review

I would like to say that this book only gets better once you get past the cover… but it doesn’t. In fact the cover is the best part of this issue and I highly recommend you stare at it for two minutes without blinking and then put it back. A weird thing about this book, is that at Wonder Con this weekend at the Image booth they had clay molds of the characters heads… I don’t know why because the art style isn’t magnificent nor is it very complex.
