The Li’l Depressed Boy #3 – Review

After the wonderfully unique and humorous Li’l Depressed Boy #2 we find this issue of LDB has a bit of a sour note – but still manages to strike a fairly nice note with me all the same. After finally discovering the name of his dream girl, Li’l Depressed Boy must go through more torture after his loss of style bowling. After this torture comes the most horrible punishment imaginable – shopping! LDB must help organize and attend Jazmin’s party and try not to get lost in a crowd full of hipsters.

Wonder Con Reviews – Holli Hoxxx #1

This beautifully colored book caught my eye instantly while walking down artist alley. In fact it was next door to Hey Derby Girl. The gorgeous Holli Hoxxx seems like it would be a typical male fantasy book that dominated the market in the 90’s, but it’s not at all. Don’t let the beautiful Holli Hoxxx fool you into thinking that she’s just another pretty face because she’s far from it. The setting of the book is Manhattan, New York and the world has no gravity. Yes you read that right, the world has no gravity. One companyTycho has created shoes that give you gravity… as long as your battery is charged. For years Tycho has been the number one company on the planet as they develop newer shoes with better batteries and keep literally everyone from falling off of the planet.

Charlie Brown, Snoopy, and all your favorite Peanuts are back at KaBoom! as a part of Boom! Studios newest collected hardcover called Happiness is a Warm Blanket Charlie Brown. Hellboy: Buster Oakley Get His Wish – Review

Hellboy one shots are always interesting because they rarely if ever tie-in to the main storyline of Hellboy. Instead they play to the lore of the world and the agelessness of the character. In Buster Oakley Gets His Wish what starts off as a missing cow case turns out to be alien abduction. It’s suspected that some local kids have been practicing some evil magic and the cow’s disappearance has some ties to their rituals. It turns out that it’s actually aliens that have been abducted and the leader of the kid’s cult has been transformed into a cow/man hybrid. Hellboy discovers this as he too is abducted by the aliens. A fight breaks out in the ship as he must battle the little grey-ish men with the help of the cowman.

Ryder on the Storm #3 – Review

I learned something from this comic, Deamons get stronger with inbreeding… and they all sleep with their mothers. Ryder on the Storm concludes in the most logically way it can and that steals a lot of the mystery that made the series stand out originally. If you need a refresher I recommend reading our review for the first and second issue before continuing.

The Infinite Vacation #2 – Review

I picked up Infinite Vacation expecting it to be one of those independent books that deals in the idiosyncrasies of daily life, you know… one of those soul searching coming of age stories like Box Office Poison or Brooklyn Dreams. But boy was I wrong! Well… Maybe the soul searching part could still be there.  Infinite Vacation is a sci-fi book that deals in characters taking vacations in infinite realities the joy of the multiverse at the hands of men, if they pay for it that is. The book has a very unique concept, its part Sliders part Quantum Leap and a hundred percent awesome! Now the book does not only deal in vacationing in alternate realities, it is a murder mystery; our main character Mark, is being target by someone. Why? We don’t know but the “Marks” from different alternate realities are being murdered one by one and our main hero is not far behind.

Carbon Grey #2 – Review

Carbon Grey is a book that reminds me of the Metabarons, mostly by the epic fantasy style the art of this book produces. The book is set in a world war one, world war two mix with a sword fighting legendary fantasy. The Grey Sisters, are the guardians of the Kaiser the big ruler of the land. This was done by generations and usually the sisters were a trio, now this generation the sisters became a foursome two of them twins. One of the twins kills the kaiser and becomes independent of the sisters, she becomes a fugitive.

Wonder Con Review – Hey Derby Girl #1 & 2

Another book I picked up was the first two issues of Hey Derby Girl by Jeanne Beacom and Elle Skinner. Both issues are pretty short totaling around 15 actual pages of story each. The book follows Sweet Liberty, the newest member of the derby team the Gold City Wild Banditas. The first issue is really used to explain the rules of Roller Derby and establish Liberty as the newest member of the team. It’s her first night out and she’s nervous as hell which really comes across in the storytelling and art.

Starborn #5 – Review

Admittedly I have not kept up with Starborn as it just didn’t grab me as much as Soldier Zero or The Traveler did and this issue confirmed that it’s still the weak link in the chain. The other two series basically used the first four issues to explain the rules and get the characters up and running for ongoing story. With the Traveler it started with a character that knew all the rules and then in a way reset that character so that he had to figure it all out again, but the reader was left in anticipation for the day he’d regain all of his knowledge and become the character he’s destined to be.
