Velocity #4 – Advanced Review

After three issues with the speedster, Velocity reaches her
final destination in this fast-paced final issue.  The issue has a few bumps but is well worth a read.
With only fifteen minutes left, Velocity must defeat Doctor
Paine and give herself the only antidote that will save her life.
Ron Marz has created an entertaining character with more
quips than the Flash – and she might be faster too!  Velocity is a great character and her narrative has run
rampant throughout every issue of the series.  Sometimes there is too much of her narrative going on, but
it mostly brings Velocity’s witty banter to the reader that is genuinely funny
and makes you love Velocity more and more – when you don’t want her to shut up
for a minute and just save the day already.

Dark Horse Comics Presents #1 – Review

Twenty five years ago, yeah… that is right, twenty five freaking years ago! Dark Horse began their brand with Dark Horse Comics Presents! It was an anthology book in black and white that showcased different short stories, plugs to upcoming series and comic strips among other things. The range of stories could cover action stories, sci-fi, drama, comedy, the absurd and pretty much everything in-between! This was a book that anyone could find a story for their taste. But unlike other anthologies, this book almost instantly gave birth to what we called comic masterpieces. Books like Concrete, Sin City, Hellboy and The Goon were given their start or were featured in this book with major success. But time came and made us forget about this book, all its glory days and fun it offered to us comic fans. Thankfully like the phoenix that rises from the ashes Dark Horse Comic Presents is back and in full color!

Super Dinosaur Review

What do you get when you combine a super intelligent boy with a butt kicking Dinosaur that together fight crime? It’s called Super Dinosaur, Image comic’s newest comic about a boy who is super intelligent and his crime fighting Dinosaur who uses a giant mech suit to fight against other villains. The Story is written by everyone’s favorite zombie writer Robert Kirkman with art by Jason Howard.   The story is about a young boy named Derek Dynamo, he is the son of the famous Dr. Dynamo, creator of the mech suit that Super Dinosaur uses.  What makes this story even weirder is that Super Dinosaur is a talking dinosaur and he was discovered in Dynore a secret land underneath the earth where dinosaurs like Super Dinosaur live.  Together they are out on a mission trying to stop Dr Max Maximus, Derek and Super Dinosaurs arch enemy.

The Life and Times of Scrooge McDuck Volume One

I grew up on old Disney comics.  Printed in Spanish-my native language-and sold at pharmacies and supermarkets on cheap, heavy paper, these stories were a huge part of my childhood.  There were humorous, creative and showed a different aspect of Mickey, Donald, Goofy, and the Richest Duck in the World.  At the same time Duck Tales aired on television, with more adventures set in this Duck Universe.  It wasn’t until later, much later, that I discovered that this world had been the creation of one imaginative man, Carl Barks.

Twilight Guardian #4 – Review

It’s a shame that this is the fourth issue, because it really seems like the series has just begun.  The fourth issue isn’t perfect and actually breaks away from the formula that was very consistent throughout the first three issues. Troy Hickman and company continue to show why this book won Pilot Season in the first place. Top Cow would be crazy not to give the series at least another mini. That fact is this and Echoes have been the only series to come out on a timely schedule, that fact alone warrants another series at the least.

Soldier Zero #7 – Review

I was wondering when this title was going to start feeling like it was written by Abnett and Lanning and it’s with this issue that it happens. There was just a certain layer missing from the previous two issues that kept them from being a Abnett and Lanning book that’s very apparent in this issue. They explain the Soldier Zero “suit” in more detail and add a layer of humanity missing from the other half of Stewart’s personality.

Age of X: Chapters 3 & 4 – Review

The Age of X continues through X-Men Legacy and New Mutants. I find it a bit dis-hearting that Marvel’s marketing has moved on to its next X-men event already which will fall back to the 90’s blue team, gold team only this time the fate of the mutant race is at hand! Regardless, I think that they are missing out on Age of X and the potential that it has. This could have been a great chance to undo everything that Grant Morrison unleashed on the X-Men and also House of M. Since those two events the X-Men haven’t been very interesting with the exception of Joss Whedon’s run on Astonishing. Then along comes Mike Carey who practically gives Marvel a do-over. No more Hope the last child, messiah, has all the answers muckity muck. No more Cyclops thinking he knows what’s best for the entire mutant race, because he doesn’t!

Hack/Slash #3 – Review

The thing about Hack/Slash is that you don’t have to take this book seriously. It is always a fun ride for those of us who dig 1980’s slasher films. This issue we see a couple of dead people, like always, right? Nah, in this book we see the return of Bobby or the walking-dead-pet-cemetery-guy (as I like to call him). As previously shown, this means bad news for Lisa as Bobby has a bone to pick with her. Unaware that Bobby’s returned, Lisa takes a shower alone (no pooch allowed) to relax from her pregnant condition — oh! That’s right… I forgot to tell you this is a spoiler alert! If you read this far and did not want to read any spoilers for the issue, go to the nearest wall and bang your head until you lay on the floor thinking of Cassie’s super short sexy skirt.

Days Missing: Kestus #5 – Review

This book is like a punch in the face from a pretty girl. Sure she’s acknowledging you existence and even making physical contact with you, but she’s also inflicting pain upon you. The first volumes of Days Missing were separate stories from different creative teams, but with the second volume it’s been all Phil Hester and David Marquez. If you didn’t figure out why they made the switch, it’s Phil Hester. He understands these characters and the world they live in. Everything he’s been doing has been so interesting and well researched that it shows why Archaia made the creative switch.

Pick of the Week: The Malignant Man #1 – Review

First issues of unknown properties are one of the hardest things to write in the comic industry. You have to capture an audience by telling an interesting and/or unique story, give the origin and also have art that people enjoy, but also fits the story. All of this because if you don’t impress comic readers you may not make it to the end of the series or you’ll watch your sales drop. There are a lot of pitfalls when it comes to first issues and thankfully The Malignant Man avoids a lot of them.
