Hellboy: The Fury #1 – Review

With the latest chapter of Hellboy, it’s wrapping up years of storylines that have been leading to this final battle. For new readers or unfamiliar readers of the Hellboy franchise, there is a very handy recap at the beginning of the book that tells you everything you need to know about the series in order to be caught up for The Fury. The recap is two pages long, but manages to be interesting as well as informative.

50 Girls 50 #1 – Review

There’s some familiar elements to 50 Girls 50, but added together and you have a great mix of campy sci-fi that hasn’t been seen since the golden era of television. 50 Girls 50 is about a team of women that are sent through a worm hole to discover the galaxy and bring home their discoveries after being gone for over five years. The warp is set to return them, but due to a miscalculation somewhere they are sent to a different planet that’s nowhere on their maps.

B.P.R.D. – The Dead Remembered #3 – Review

What started off as interesting and revealing has ended the only way it could… solid and predictable. The Dead Remembered only really had one of two places to go and thankfully it chose a lighter ending that fit the tone and feel of the story to begin with. We open up with the Professor asking if Elizabeth has been taking her pills, which is really a segway into catching her sneaking out the night before.

Red Spike #2 – Review

Fourteen years ago Matt’s father was a part of the first Red Spike experiment and went nuts and executed his own wife which resulted in his day being shot to hell by the military. Matt is then taken to a boarding school where he’s unknowingly groomed for the Red Spike program. This is your first indication that this is the origin story and it doesn’t get much better from here on out.

The Amazing Spider-Man #661 – Review

Ever since Peter Parker joined the Future Foundation in lieu of the death of Johnny Storm, The Amazing Spider-Man series has in some ways lost sight of what it is… that it’s a Spider-Man comic. It seems as though Spider-Man is the new Deadpool, a comic that pulls all other comics into it and adds a bumbling funny man in the form of the titular hero. However, even though the comic has recently lost its focus, I did enjoy reading this one.

Batman #710 – Review

The latest Batman
focuses on an interesting premise regarding someone that hasn’t really been
seen around the DCU lately: Two-Face. In issue #710, writer Tony Daniel decides
to take away that which makes the rogue tick, and that’s his coin. Throughout
the character’s career of tormenting Gotham, Two-Face’s coin has basically made
all of his decisions for him. It’s sometimes rocky, and its focus may wander,
but the return of Two Face is not without some great moments.

Moriarty: The Dark Chamber #2 – Advanced Review

Moriarty:
The Dark Chamber
#1
was a deeply intellectual piece of work with its fair
share of flaws keeping it from being a classic.  This issue of Moriarty seems to expand the flaws but still
leaves some material that is very good.  Moriarty: The Dark Chamber #2 is mostly one step away
from being bad and fails to stand out when compared to its predecessor – but it does
manage to have some enjoyable things, even though they could have been utilized
better.

Myths & Legends #4 – Review

We’re four issues into this series and there’s an underlining mystery to everything that’s happening in the book, but it is taking way too get to the point. This issue opens with Brittany as a girl at the zoo… talking to the wolves. That’s right the little girl that talks to wolves is now in charge of psychiatric care for a mental institution. After that we’re thrust back into the group as the security guard starts beating on the girl that cuts herself asking what happened (note: This is the second time he’s kicked her ass). Problem, if you didn’t read the last issue it’s not clear to you what happened. No one recaps it in dialog other than to say that the girl should know something that she clearly doesn’t.

Conan: Road of Kings #5 – Review

This is another title that I jumped right into without reading previous issues and I have to say that it wasn’t a bad experience as a new reader to the series. There’s something about the character of Conan that fires that neuron in the brain that controls excitement. In Conan’s world being a barbarian is actually not a good thing, but then you see just how bad-ass he is and you can’t help but think that everyone else in his world is wrong… barbarians are cool!
