A Comic Cover is Worth 300,000 Words… and Dollars

A cover from the famous Robinson collection of comics will be coming up for auction.  The comic, Detective Comics #67, only has a cover, and is expected to draw $300,000.  Robinson was the artist of the cover and one of the original members of the Batman legacy, helping create the Joker and co-create the first Robin, Dick Grayson.

Detective Comics #67 is only one of three DC comic covers from the Robinson collection that are from 1942, during the WWII era.  Detective Comics #67 is even more of a gem because it features the first cover appearance of the villain, Penguin. The collector, Robinson, was the one who penciled and inked this cover, which features Penguin riding an ostrich while fighting off the Batman with his umbrella… only in comics.

What happens when Wolverine fights a bunch of dragons? Probably something awesome. It’s too bad that would never happen, though by never happen, I of course mean it is completely happening. Marvel has released a few pages of the upcoming Wolverine #19, and they are certainly something you should see. Take a look at the fantastic art by Ron Garney.

Learn Real-Life Survival Tips from a Zombie Comic

The CDC (Center for Disease Control) recently released an online graphic novel following the success of their blog post in May which featured zombies.  Their new zombie graphic novel, appropriately called Preparedness 101: Zombie Pandemic, is being used to teach people how to survive in the real-world during such real-life terrors as floods and hurricanes with some help from the undead.

On Friday, the CDC’s online graphic novel went live.  The comic took a few weeks to write and a month and a half to draw, but was worth it as it became a hit at New York’s ComicCon.

Ron Marz’s Witchblade Run Ends with Issue 150

After an almost sixteen year run beginning in November of 1995, Ron Marz 71 issue run on Witchblade will be coming to a close later this year with the final issue being Witchblade #150.  Writer Ron Marz and artist Stjepan Sejic are stepping away from the Witchblade project to work on another top secret Top Cow title.

Writer Ron Marz, who has been writing Witchblade since issue #80 (and with artist Stjepan Sejic since issue #116), has too many projects going on and had to let one go. That title was Witchblade. He will still be continuing his ongoing series Magdelena, his series for Image featuring the samurai vampire hunter Shinku, and the Top Cow event of the year Artifacts, where Sara will continue to appear. Her character is not completely gone in Top Cow continuity, but her book will be.

Comic Sales Fall In July

Why are comic prices dropping? It’s because there are too many comic books coming out. It feels a bit like Christmas season with so many choices.  Hopefully consumers will buy more after the September relaunch of DC. Marvel and DC are competing for market shares. What disappoints me the most is when sales start to drop, indie comic choices are reduced. Indie comics are the life blood of the industry. Some of your favortie creators started their success by writing indie genres. The real message here is get out and buy some damn comics! There are several 1st issues available like Punisher by Greg Rucka, Daredevil by Mark Waid and a whole slew of other DC choices.

The Occultist Returns

The Occultist is finally returning to Dark Horse. It was definitely one of the more interesting one shots of last year and thankfully writer Tim Seeley is returning to the book. You should know Tim by his creator owned series Hack/Slash from Image Comics. That series may be on a downward spiral but Tim’s writing on The Occultist was fresh and exciting. The ongoing title isn’t out until November 9th so you have some time to find the one shot and give it a read for yourself. I’m sure there are plans to release it digitally before then as well, but in the meantime you can enjoy this blurp from Dark Horse.
