Irredeemable/Incorruptible End in May

Revealed in a Newsarama interview, Maid Waid will end his two creator-owned series from BOOM! Studios later this year in May. Irredeemable and Incorruptible, telling the stories of a world’s hero becoming a mass murderer and one of its worst criminals rising up to protect people, began back in 2009.

“Okay, really, truly — I’m just stretched thin right now both personally and professionally, and I live in mortal fear that I’m going to overstay my welcome on these books. Moreover, I feel that Max Damage’s character arc is reaching its end in Incorruptible. And in Irredeemable, I’ve long known what the end of that series is, and lately, it’s as if all the characters are moving into position for it whether I want them to or not. So let’s go out big and grand, I say,” Waid describes his reasons for ending the two titles.

Justice League #4 to have second printing

DC has announced that Justice League #4 is going back to the press for second printing.  It will be available on 29 February.  They also mentioned that Justice League #1 is going to have its sixth printing available on 15 February.  This has been a pretty amazing run for the flagship title of the New 52 initiative.  The question is what lesson the publishers should take from this colossal feat of sales?

On the one hand it could be seen as the  fruits of putting fan-favorite creators Geoff Johns and Jim Lee on a book features all of the classic DC characters.  On the other hand it could be seen as a reason to pointlessly renumber comic seriies at #1 again.  Number one issues tend to sell very well and Marvel has certainly been shameless in releasing #1s without a cohesive reason like the New 52.  We can hope, however naively, that it wil be the former lesson they learn and not the latter.

John Rozum, “Why I Quit Static”

Back when Static Shock and several other DC titles had their cancellations announced, the obvious reason for all of them to be cancelled was blamed first: their sales rates were too low. But there was also more hinted at behind the cancellations of two specific titles: Mister Terrific and Static Shock. Both series feature African-American protagonists, and this has lead to streams of people yelling at DC and accusing them of being “racist.”

John Rozum, who worked on the first four issues of Static Shock before the announcement of Static’s cancellation, combats this criticism of DC by unveiling the true reasons leading to his departure from the series, and Static’s countdown to cancellation, despite his original wish to keep quiet. Here is an excerpt from his blog post “Why I Quit Static.”

Marvel Ends Moon Knight in April

Surprising many, Marvel Comics’ solicitations for April included the final issue of Moon Knight. The series is now set to end that month with issue 12. Brian Michael Bendis has confirmed this but also assured fans that this will be the end of his story that he and Alex Maleev intended from the start. The duo signed on for a twelve issue story, meaning this cancellation has no impact on their original plans.

Moon Knight was one of the three relaunches in Marvel’s Big Shots Initiative from 2011. This initiative paired three characters with three high profile creative teams in the hopes of giving each property new life. What this produced were three series generally well-received by readers and critically acclaimed by reviewers.

Batman, Inc to Pick Up Where it Left Off

On DC’s The Source editor Mike Marts had the following to say about the upcoming Batman, Inc:

“Grant Morrison’s new BATMAN, INCORPORATED series is the final, unbelievable act of a saga six years in the making,” said Marts. “Along with his artistic partner-in-crime Chris Burnham, Grant delivers twists, turns, punches and reveals no reader will see coming. Things pick up directly after the shocking cliffhanger of last year’s LEVIATHAN STRIKES one-shot—and only get crazier from there!”

Liefeld’s The Infinite Cancelled

Liefeld lovers (if you exist), cry, Liefeld haters, rejoice. The Infinite has been cancelled due to both parties of the creative team having issues deciding on how to move forward with the series.

Not only was the series running behind with no issues released in December and January as originally planned, but the ever-familiar “creative differences” were blamed on the blow-out between the collaborative team of Rob Liefeld (Image Comics co-founder) and Robert Kirkman (creator of the Walking Dead).

DC Comics Campaign “We Can Be Heroes”

On January 23, 2012 DC Comics announced their campaign called “We can be Heroes”. The campaign is supported by Warner Brother’s Entertainment and Time Warner’s business. “We Can Be Heroes” is a way to use Dc characters to help us become real life heroes. With this campaign we can help organizations like Save the Children, International Rescue Committee, and Mercy Corps to help the hunger crisis in Africa. Africa is dealing with drought and hunger worst than they have been in 60 years. More than 250,000 people are facing starvation in Africa. They need our help.

You may be asking to yourself, how can we help? At http://www.joinwecanbeheroes.org/ you will be able to donate money to the cause. 10$ will give a child peanut paste that would keep a child alive for more than a week. 25$ would help 3 families of 6 have purified water for a month. 50$ provides a household of 6 with food, water, and hygiene items for 2 weeks. 100$ can let a malnourished child be able to make a full recovery.
