When it comes to panels at Comic Con, I find myself either at a very standard panel, the DC Nations, the Mondo Marvel’s or something to do with TV. But when it comes to Saturday I usually find that the day is more enjoyable if I go off the beaten path and skip the infestation of Hollywood movies and TV shows and go with something different. So when Kevin suggested the Writing for Comic’s Panel, I said yes, let’s do it.
To my surprise this ended up being the best panel I saw at the convention. The panel was hosted by Andy Schmidt a former editor for Marvel and Senior Editor for IDW Publishing. Andy also teaches an online school from writing comics at ComicsExperience.com, which has several online courses for people interested. Andy invited several writers that he’s worked/working with to the panel including Brian Michael Bendis, (Scarlett, Avengers, the Siege), Mike Costa (G.I. Joe: Cobra, Transformers) and Marc Guggenheim (Wolverine, Resurrection).
For roughly four years now I’ve had the joy of attending former Mystery Science Theater 3000 veteran’s panel in some form or another. The first year Mike, Kevin and Bill presented The Film Crew in which the three were tasked with making sure every movie had a commentary track. It was a bit like MST3000 but it really didn’t capture the feel and became limited in the product it could produce.
What was limitless was the brainchild of Mike, Riff Trax. For those unfamiliar with Riff Trax, it’s an audio track that is downloaded from the site of the same name. This audio track is a “riffing audio track” in which the team then makes fun of a movie. It ranges from the Matrix to Daredevil and all the way to Footloose. The brilliance of the idea is that they’re not redistributing the movie like they were on MST3000, just an audio track that sync’s up with the movie.
Here we are again with Cosplay Friday and Booth Babes. Friday had quiet the variety of Anime, Comics and Movie cosplay giving us a bit of variety. Anyone who dresses up definitely deserves a pat on the back as there’s almost always a feeding frenzy around them of people taking photos. The hilarious thing is that most people don’t even know who the people are and so they won’t take a photo until someone else does. For that I apologize to most of these people as I created a couple of frenzy’s around them by taking their photo. Without further ado we begin part 2!

A big part of what DC does is Batman and Superman. Both franchise are so popular that they have several ongoing titles that star each character and their supporting cast. Last year Batman RIP was the big topic surrounding the Bat franchise. This year the Return of Bruce Wayne is rolling through the block of DC books. Batman editor Mark Marts hosted this years Batman panel that basically caught people up on what is currently happening and what is going to happen with the Batman franchise.
In attendance is Grant Morrison (Batman and Robin, The Return of Bruce Wayne), David Finch (Brightest Day covers), Dustin Nguyen (Batman Beyond Covers), Gail Simone (Birds of Prey), Paul Dini (Zatanna), Scott Synder (American Vampire), Paul Cornell (Action Comics) and Judd Winick (Red Hood: Lost Days).
Included is my play by play of the panel so enjoy!
One of the best parts of any convention is the Cosplay. This a time when people get to dress up as their favorite characters from Comics, Movies, Video Games, Novels and whatever weird crap they can think of. Since Comic Con is the largest convention in the country it increases the amount of people dressing up. Some of the costumes are pretty good and others… not so much. Kevin and I have been collecting photos to show everyone first… ah second hand, so enjoy!
Up first we have Green Arrow!
Welcome to another Player Affinity Live blog. This time we have DC Comic’s Superman the Return! This panel will feature what’s happening with all the Superman titles including Action Comics, Superman, Adventure Comics, Supergirl and whatever surprises DC has in store. So join Kevin and I as we cover it live including all… well most of the Q&A depending on the quality of the questions.
In attendance for the panel is: Paul Cornell, Shane Davis, Sterling Gates, Jeff Lemire and J. Micheal Straczynski
Welcome to Bagged and Boarded we’re here at Comic Con and we just got out of the Mondo Marvel panel. Get ready for a lot of Marvel as we recap the panel, the people and the questions asked of the panelist.
First off C.B. Cebulski moderated the panel and the rest of the panelist include: Jeph Loeb, Brian Michael Bendis, Jim McCann, Andy Lanning and Dan Abnett and four editors whose name are not important. They started the with congrats to Loeb and Cebulski on their promotions both are basically in charge of infusing Marvel into all other facets of media i.e. video games, TV Shows, etc.
And welcome to Player Affinity Comics, Comic Con International coverage. We’re going to start the day off with a Live Blog from DC Comic’s first panel of the convention: DC Nation – Convention Kickoff. Since it’s the first comic panel of the day and the con it looks to be fun. Coverage starts at 11:30 PST so tune in then and maybe Kevin and I will have some pre-coverage banter about DC Comics Writers Unite!
