My Top Ten Comic Book Mini-Series

Here are my personal top ten favorite mini-series ranging from well-known DC titles to lesser known Vertigo ones!

10) Rising Stars: Voices of the Dead – Voices of the Dead is the second Rising Stars spin-off and stars Lionel Zerb, a man with the ability to talk to the dead. Despite the obvious parallel to numerous movies like the Sixth Sense Voices of the Dead manages to make an interesting character and a compelling story. The story was something you really had to pay attention to since it was easy to get lost, but the stories complex nature just makes it more open to interpretation – anything could happen and a lot does despite the fact that Voices of the Dead was only six issues long. The story is fully realized and not rushed like many other mini-series are and the series does not focus on a well established series like Superman where a mini-series usually has no effect on the character. In this series anything can happen to the characters: and again, it does.

Cyber Mondays: The Dark Tower

This week on cyber Mondays, The Dark Tower. Stephen King’s masterpiece series, hit the digital market the last two weeks and… Oh boy! This series is ten times of awesome. First of all, the series was a smash hit when it came out in single issue form and is easy to say that this book was made for comics . Now the series is on the comixology app and is obvious that this comic was made for the digital medium.

Wonder Con – Oni Press Interactive Panel

The panel begun with Cory, the Marketing Director for Oni Press announcing the following, “Panels are boring and Oni Press Panels are not boring so raise your hand at any time to ask a question or make a comment.” This was like no other panel I’ve been too and was very fun because of that. I’m going to keep the recap pretty loose and leave it the way that it played out so that you can get a better feel for it. The panel consists of Rapper Adam WarRock, Tyler Crook and Brian Hurtt. They talk with Adam about the mixtape, while playing the mixed tap. The tape is nerdcore rap and is all about Oni Presses books including KO Super Pro, The Sixth Gun, Salt Water Taffy and Hopeless Savages.

Wonder Con – IDW Godzilla

Large amount of Godzilla fans in the audience. I can tell because there’s several Godzilla shirts and fans holding the Wondercon exclusive cover (which I’ll be getting). They begin by showing a list of the Monsters that IDW has from the Godzilla universe which are: Anguirus, Battra, Destoroyah, Gigan, Hedorah, King Ghidorah, Kumonga, Mechagodzilla, Mothra, Rodan, Space Godzilla, Titanosaurous. Godzilla Kingdom of Monster is the flagship ongoing series which had a 70,000 print run and sold out in one day and was easily their fastest and largest print run. Phil Hester is doing the artwork for the first four issues which is a big deal since he rarely does pencil’s anymore. They had a reoccurring theme of asking people if they had time and everyone said no due to scheduling until they found out it was Godzilla.

Wonder Con – Boom! Studios Panel

The panel opened up with talking about Hellraiser selling out in 2-1/2 days at the distributor level. Matt the EIC knows Clive from his time at working in a comic shop. Clive used to be a customer and is pretty normal. Clive is a true blue comic fan and knows his Kirby, Silver Age and even modern comics. Talking about the prelude which you can still download it on our site here! They discuss their market research that a lot of people don’t know that comics come out every Wednesday. Talking to their retail partners they said the free prelude was one of the things that drove new readers to the shops. Hellraiser is the first on-going mature reader’s book.

You Missed That Issue? Crossed: Family Values #6

Welcome
the series spotlighting some of the best single issues in comics from
the past decade. You will not find Watchmen, Sin City, Dark Phoenix
Saga or Action Comics #775 anywhere on this list. These are comics
that, with a little effort, you’ll find on the Internet or lost in
the back issues of your comic book store. Because this article is not
a review, and since these issues are not necessarily new, any
surprise, cliffhanger or death
will
be spoiled

in an attempt to show why the book shouldn’t have been missed.

Crossed
is a creator-owned series from writer Garth Ennis and artist Jacen
Burrows. It all started with
Crossed
#0 on August 27, 2008 and all 10 issues have been released.
The second series Crossed:
Family Values
is written by David Lapham and drawn by Javier
Barreno

Pick This Book Up – Green Wake #1

In “Pick This Book Up” I will be spotlighting a book I will be picking up next week and why I’ve decided to spend the price of more than a gallon of gas on it.  Green Wake is my choice for next week and will hopefully not disappoint with promises of grisly murder in mind.

Horror is definitely a genre that has been twisted in every direction and has often found itself screaming when monotonous ideas are used over and over again and there is no more creativity: just pointlessly overused blood to garner the reader’s attention away from the lackluster story. A good murder mystery is hard to find with so many others out there and hopefully Green Wake from Image publishers will prove to be a great one.

The premise is simple: in Green Wake there have been numerous grisly murders. Our protagonist Morley Mack is perusing a woman known as Ariel that is the prime suspect in the murders. As Morley begins to discover the truth he also finds the case has a connection to his past…

Iconic Costume or Iconic Logo? You Pick!

After attending the DC Nation panel where they were still talking about fans disliking Wonder Woman’s new costume I just knew I had to bring up this debate. In my opinion there are two things that separate DC and Marvel’s superheroes: Their costumes and their emblems. So the question is which is better? Which do fans care more about? Well let’s run through it and see first what separates the two companies characters and what they share in common, because believe me there are things the two companies share in common.

After One More Day, Should You Read Spider-Man?

To read or not to read Spider-man? That is the question, sticking in every web head’s mind. It’s been a couple of years since One More Day changed the status quo of the Spider books and Brand New Day tried to inject a much needed youthful new direction to a new and Amazing Spider-man. But what didBrand New Day bring us? More quantity and less stories? Has Peter Parker, changed his motto from with “great powers comes great responsibility” to with “great power comes great irresponsibility?” Are the writers at fault for trying something new or is the fans fault for denying this character the ability to grow up? Was it really worth it to changed the status quo at all?
