Publisher You Should Know: Archaia Press

With comic books mostly dominated by the big two in local comic book shops, it is sometimes difficult for the smaller publisher to get noticed in those same shops. That is why I am going to talk about  a smaller publisher that are doing great things in comics and why you should consider picking some of their great material up. Archaia comic was founded in 2002 by Mark Symlie, as a home for his comic titled Artesia because the publisher that he was working for at the time wanted to publish his book in black in white instead of color.  He quickly published his book and other books like Mouseguard , and Robotika and the company became a big success over night. Now Archaia has over 30 titles that they publish. From famous properties like Fraggle Rockto creator own properties like Mouseguard and their Black Label book Lucid, Archaia has a vast selection of material for you to pick up.

Publisher You Should Know: Vertigo Comics

Comics published by Vertigo have a violent, grisly and intellectual appeal best suited for mature audiences unlike Vertigo’s parent company DC Comics – maybe you’ve heard of them? Vertigo was started by Karen Berger, an editor at DC comics. Berger enjoyed horrific comics without the super-powered heroes DC publishes annually. This passion of Berger’s inspired her to create Vertigo Comics with the help of several other editors. Vertigo Comics began in 1993 and Karen Berger is still the executive editor.DMZ: Set in the near future another civil war has been set into motion and Manhattan has become a demilitarized zone.  Photography Matthew Roth enters Manhatten for the first time for some pics and little Matty winds up an instant celebrity since he is the only news source inside the DMZ and the government isn’t too happy with him…  DMZ was one of the rare Vertigo titles that reached the 50 issue mark!

Publisher You Should Know: Oni Press

One of the most successful independent comic companies in the industry, Oni Press produces a wide variety of comics that are all creator owned. Meaning, Oni makes no claim to the ownership of the characters or their rights. That Scott Pilgrim movie that didn’t do so well in the box office, but that no one could stop talking about? Nothing to do with them. That White Out movie that tanked in the box office? Nothing to do with them. That free mix tape from Adam WarRock about their books? Nothing… oh wait that did have everything to do with them.

My Top Ten Comic Books

When my editor told me “you got to pick your top ten books”  I said to him no way I’m not choosing between my children. Then he said dude– your top ten comic books… And I reply: oh… Oh.. Books…In that case then… Ill do it. But the truth is, is not easy, I have been reading comics for twenty years, that is a lot of funny pages right there. Besides if I  go into a top ten, Alan Moore’s books alone could fill that list but for the sake of variety I will only put a few of then. Now the task of a filling a top ten out so many books might leave some books that I love out of the list but a list of ten is so limited. But I guess I have to do it.

My Top Ten Comic Books

Lists, what’s to say…I hate them.
They’re pretty much stupid and unless and do nothing for me. But for some reason people
want to share, brag or find some sort of relevance and acceptance
from others. So with out further ado here are some comics, in no
significant order, that are not so munch my favorites but just really
awesome books. Enjoy and you’ll probably hate all of them.

My Top Ten Comic Books

When I first heard that we were making our very own
personal list of our top ten comic books that we love to read I was super
excited.   There are so many great books that I have read
over the years and making a list of ten was exciting and hard. Still, l I
managed to dwindle it down to my personal ten favorite comic books.  I hope you all enjoy my selections.

My Top Ten Comic Books

This is actually very hard for me to do. A lot of comic readers have a list of their favorites that they can rattle off at the drop of a hat and a lot of the times they’re the “safe answer.” Things like Watchmen, Frank Miller’s run on Daredevil or anything Alan Moore. Because of this I’ve always avoided creating a list of my top books. That and I’ve read so much it becomes harder and harder to pick what’s better than everything else. Yet here I am struggling to do an assignment that I assigned, but it had to be done. Hopefully you get a window into the reading habits of the comic writers that make up PAC (Player Affinity Comics) and maybe you’ll stop by the forums and give us yours.
