Do Teen Characters Grow Up Too Fast?

The claim about young comic characters growing up is that it’s an inevitable progression of stories. But does that mean writers have to rush to see it through? Isn’t it up to them if the supposedly inevitable ever actually happens? The Teen Titans, Young Avengers, New Warriors, Generation X, New X-Men. When being young is such a defining part of their identity, growing up comic characters does far more harm than good.

Top 5 Best Secret Identities

Unlike the secret identity don’t winners, these heroes and villains know how to keep their identities secret. Sometimes just because of their powers themselves…

Say what you will about the gritty original adventures of Spawn back in the 90s, Al Simmons had the perfect secret identity: a man dead and buried for five years. His ravaged face is unrecognizable, with only his word proving he’s truly Al Simmons.

Should Marvel Give Up on Black Panther?

For nearly fifteen years, Black Panther has been featured in a starring role on the shelves. It began in 1998 with the launch of his Marvel Knights series and continued since then through various relaunches and limited series. While it’s true that some months did go by without a Black Panther book when he was in between series, these gaps were never wide and long lasting. The next book was always on the horizon. I think this is something that gets overlooked a lot when people talk about comic companies’ dedication to improving diversity. Marvel Comics may not have launched so many titles starring minority leads as DC Comic recently has, but Marvel has shown a longstanding commitment to one of their top black heroes that will be hard to match.

But is that a commitment that should continue? With the end of Black Panther: Most Dangerous Man Alive, it may be time for Marvel to move on.

Indie Comic Movie Fancast – Sweet Tooth

With The Walking Dead Series, Locke & Key having a pilot episode, and even Chew preparing for the screen, it’s clear that indie comics are on the rise in Hollywood. It’s only a matter of time before all of your favorite indie comics are seen on the little and big screen. In honor of this rise, I have decided to pick some of the up-and-coming indie comics and provide some wishful thinking as to how the cast should work out. In short, a fancasting. And this month, it’s all about Jeff Lemire’s Sweet Tooth.

Top 5 Worst Secret Identities: DC Addition

Some superheroes keep their identities hidden for their entire lives with no one the wiser, even their loved ones. Most of these readers scratch their heads at this because of how obvious the heroes duel-identity is. But who have the worst kept secrets that everyone in a comic could figure out if they were given a brain cell or weren’t blinded by convenience? Our ‘lucky’ winners below.

Bruce Wayne is an extremely intelligent and suave lady-killer, who many would least-suspect to be a crime-fighting superhero. Until he came out to the public as having supplied Batman with his utilities. Is it really that hard for a reporter to dig a little deeper and figure out that this playboy plays superhero at night? And even if they fail to uncover that relatively no-brainer mystery, Wayne is publically allying himself with Batman, meaning he will have a huge bull’s-eyes on his back telling his ‘heroes” respective baddies to come and get him as blackmail material for Batman. They could hurt Wayne’s loved one’s to get at Batman – and isn’t that the whole point of having a secret identity? Protecting your loved ones?

Looking Ahead at 2012

Like most Januaries, this past one was spent looking back at the year before. What was the best, what was the worst, what were we just looking for any excuse to bring up again. It’s tradition, but it also neglects the brand new year. January also gives us a pretty good idea of what we have coming, so let’s think about what each of the big publishers have in store for us in 2012.

Avengers Vs. X-Men is obviously taking center stage for 2012, and that says a lot about what kind of year this will be. It may seem pessimistic to say, but the outlook is not so good on this event. The first big warning sign is that it doesn’t even have a writer. It has writers. It’s an event written by committee, and we all know how often those turn out well. Years ago, Marvel ruled as the king of events. Controversial with readers as it was, no one can touch how successful Civil War was. I will mock you childishly for even trying to suggest that Annihilation wasn’t one of the best cosmic events Marvel has ever done. And there’s a cheeky part of me you can kiss if you want to claim Planet Hulk isn’t among the greatest Hulk stories. No, no. Look down. That’s the part. But the Marvel of then is not the Marvel of now. The string of lackluster events in 2011 made that case clearly. Will Avengers Vs. X-Men be a rock bottom event that forces Marvel to rethink the value of events? I’d wager that’s more likely than it being a resurgence of Marvel’s status as king of events.

Considering Comics: Black and White VS. Color

Comics have always been first and foremost a visual medium. There are countless artists that have been, will be, and are involved in comics, each with their own style. Now, one style may certainly appeal to guy A more than it does to girl B, but there is one factor in comic art that seems to make a big difference: Is it in color?
