It’s been a busy week for gaming’s resident vault hunters as Borderlands 2 soars to the top of the UK Video Game Chart. On top of that, the open-world sequel has also claimed the kudos as the best-selling launch week game of 2012 so far. However, on a slightly more negative note, Gearbox chief Randy Pitchford recently noted that some of the future Borderlands 2 DLC will not be covered by the Season Pass. Read on for all the details.
Borderlands 2 is one of those rare games whose success stems from a once ignored title. Borderlands saw little retail attention when it was released back in 2009, but rave reviews and a cult following have raised it to legendary status. With that status behind it, Borderlands 2 released last week to huge sales numbers. Accounting for 71% of Xbox 360 sales the FPS-RPG hybrid shot to the top of the UK game chart, outperforming F1 2012, Pro Evo 2013 and LittleBigPlanet Vita among others. Overcoming that feat, Borderlands 2 is also now officially the biggest selling launch title of 2012, beating Mass Effect 3 by over 4000 copies. Unsurprisingly, the sales figures exceed the original Borderlands by more than 4 to 1.
Of course, with this week’s line up Borderlands 2 is unlikely to maintain its dominant position. With World of Warcraft add-on Mists of Pandaria and EA’s super seller FIFA 13 both set for release this week, I’d be surprised to see 2K’s game on top again.

As for news on the game itself, Gearbox CEO Randy Pitchford made several comments recently on Kotaku concerning the DLC plan for Borderlands 2. Despite the release of a £20 ‘Season Pass’ last week, it turns out the Season Pass won’t actually cover you for the entire Borderlands 2 ‘season’, as it were. Pitchford noted,
“the Campaign DLC Season Pass is big DLC stuff - more like Knoxx (one of the big Borderlands DLC packs). We're extremely far along with the first campaign DLC. The second DLC is also in amazing shape. The third DLC is a little farther out and the fourth DLC is just in the pre-concept stages. We will have other, non-season pass related DLC”
The news could come as a disappointment for those hoping to scoop up all the Borderlands 2 DLC with the Season Pass. Pitchford, however, went on to note that non-Season Pass DLC will take the form of smaller and less significant character based content like the soon to be released Mechromancer pack.
