Video game veterans Atari Europe has now announced the remake of 1980's classic castle defense game Warlords.
Originally on the Atari 2600, Warlords is an action strategy game where up to four players must defend their castles from mischievous minions and a fire-breathing dragon as they multitask in order to build defenses and rally troops in order to gain control points and destroy other factions. As well as the original premise of the game mixed with new layers of strategy, players can experience a mix of online competitive and cooperative game modes, including co-op siege mode and classic free-for-all battles.
The "whimsical reinvention" of the arcade classic is being developed by Griptonite Games, best known for their handheld titles, including Spore Creatures on the Nintendo DS, and the Assassin's Creed spin-offs for both Nintendo DS and the PlayStation Portable. The Warlords remake will be the first downloadable console game by Griptonite Games.
However, this is not the first time that Atari attempted to rejuvenate the 1980's arcade classic for a modern audience. An "enhanced" version of Warlords, developed by Stainless Games, was released on Xbox LIVE Arcade back in 2008, but was slammed by critics.
Jim Wilson, President and CEO of Atari, Inc. says "Warlords infuses the arcade action genre with a bold and vibrant visual style coupled with robust strategic gameplay. It exemplifies our design goals and company strategy as we reintroduce these classic brands to a new generation of gamers."
Warlords will rally in for a summer 2011 release on PlayStation Network and Xbox LIVE Arcade.
