In case you missed it, the theme and title for the third season for FX’s horror anthology series was announced this past Friday during the show’s panel at Paleyfest. Ryan Murphy declared that American Horror Story: Coven will be the official title, confirming for many the presence of witches for the upcoming season’s storyline. Of course it’s not going to be just witches as Murphy insisted it will focus on “other things” as well. If season two is any kind of indication of the show’s future, we can expect the storyline to focus on a variety of horror tropes. Murphy elaborated that part of the third season will be shot in location in New Orleans as well as other undisclosed cities. No word yet on plot specifics, but significant casting announcements have been made. Joining American Horror Story veterans (Jessica Lange, Evan Peters, Sarah Paulson, Lily Rabe, and Frances Conroy) is Academy Award winner Kathy Bates as a potential villain who will antagonize Jessica Lange’s character. Taissa Farmiga, who played troubled teenager Violet Harmon in season one, will also join the cast after being absent from the second season.
Murphy has been very protective of details concerning the third season, much like he was with the previous one, so important information will probably not be released until the weeks leading up to the premiere in October. He has, however, divulged small details and clues about the nature of the season stating that it will be “historical in nature” and that it will take a lighter tone than the very gloomy second season.
