In a complete surprise move today, Square-Enix and Crystal Dynamics have announced they are revealing a multiplayer mode for Tomb Raider. I'm just as shocked as anyone else, as I can't remember at any point the developer even mentioning this concept appearing in the revival of the series.
And that's really all that's been said at this point. The big reveal is coming thanks to the Official Xbox Magazine, which hits subscribers tomorrow and newstands on January 8th. What might this multiplayer be? Well one could point to the Uncharted franchise, and I for one hope that they don't go this route. While I know that there are people out there that love the multiplayer in that series, it never grabbed me as anything more then a "tacked on experience." Another rumor is that it could go the Mass Effect 3 route, and offer up a sort of "horde mode" multiplayer. I would welcome this much more then the first option. Especially in recent years, I'd rather see a developer spend all their time on developing a fantastic single player experience.
What will it actually be? We will know as the details are revealed tomorrow. Tomb Raider comes out on March 5, 2013 for the Xbox 360, Playstation 3, and PC.
