With December upon us, studios are ready to begin their awareness push for this summer's biggest movies. One of those films is J.J. Abrams' sequel Star Trek Into Darkness. We've seen very little of the film, but we have our first piece of marketing material in this new poster.
Cool? Yes. Original? Not so much. At first glance you'll be reminded of The Dark Knight Rises with a cutout of the franchise's iconic symbol made from buildings, but as /Film points out, the 'shadowy back of the main character in front of a structure' motif has been worn to death.
Here's the recently released synopsis for the film as well. It definitely makes the choice for the poster make sense regardless of its lack of uniqueness:
In Summer 2013, pioneering director J.J. Abrams will deliver an explosive action thriller that takes Star Trek Into Darkness. When the crew of the Enterprise is called back home, they find an unstoppable force of terror from within their own organization has detonated the fleet and everything it stands for, leaving our world in a state of crisis.
With a personal score to settle, Captain Kirk leads a manhunt to a war-zone world to capture a one man weapon of mass destruction. As our heroes are propelled into an epic chess game of life and death, love will be challenged, friendships will be torn apart, and sacrifices must be made for the only family Kirk has lef: his crew.
Star Trek Into Darkness does as much as its title suggests on May 17, 2013.
