This morning the nominees for this year’s Emmy awards were announced and below is a glance at some of the major categories, with few surprises and in my opinion, way too much Glee than is healthy for any person, no matter how flamboyantly fabulous you might be.
Comedy Series
Curb Your EnthusiasmThe Office looks like the favourite in this category, although I’m willing to bet that Glee could sing and dance its way to the top spot here. Strange that neither Community or Chuck are present, but all in all, not the best year for comedy, with most of my comedic relief presented in either talk show or panel-quiz format.
Drama Series
Breaking BadThis list alone highlights how much audiences have been spoilt with fantastic drama shows this year, with every one of the above delivering consistently great TV. For me, Breaking Bad should be acknowledged as all out winner, but I’m guessing that Lost will win for obvious reasons. My favourite show of 2010, Spartacus: Blood and Sand isn’t there, which is a shame, but I can imagine that it may have been a little too violent and sexually explicit for most of Middle America.
Lead Actor in a Comedy Series
Jim Parsons, The Big Bang TheoryAgain not an enormous amount of choice here and I’m at pains to describe any of these nominees as worthy. However, Alec Baldwin definitely delivered the best performance of the 6.
Lead Actress in a Comedy Series
Lea Michele, GleeUnfortunately, I’m struggling to recall any outstanding moments from any of the above, although I should point out that I’m not a fan of any of these shows whatsoever and so probably not qualified to comment. I do enjoy Julie Bowen’s character in Modern Family and would have liked to see her get a mention. Maybe next year.
Lead Actor in a Drama Series
Bryan Cranston, Breaking BadBryan Cranston should really win this hands down, due to his incredible portrayal of a High School chemistry teacher/Meth cook. However, will they present him the award 2 years in a row? Hmmm, not sure. The more likely winner is Michael C. Hall for Dexter, although Matthew Fox may be handed the award out of respect for his contribution.
Lead Actress in a Drama Series
Kyra Sedgwick, The CloserMy pick would be Julianna Margulies for her excellent performance in The Good Wife which really stood out to me last year, but all of the above deserve their nominations
Outstanding Variety, Music or Comedy Series
The Colbert ReportI would like to see Bill Maher win this one but that may just be because I have grown to love that man like a father. If I could be a middle aged comedian with a strong Jewish accent (in my Flashforward, I actually was) I’d be Bill Maher.
So there they are, told you there weren’t many surprises didn’t I. 24 fades to black without a mention and my favourite show (possibly this decade) Spartacus: Blood and Sand is not recognised. Do you feel like they have snubbed any of your favourites, or do you think the list is spot on?
The Emmy’s will air on NBC on August 29th, hosted by the relentless and questionably unhilarious Jimmy Fallon. Find the full list of nominees here (pdf).
