Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. – Broken Promises Review

It’s been a few weeks since we last saw the S.H.I.E.L.D. team, but this week’s episode of Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. picked up right where we left off, with Aida on the loose. Of course there were a few other things going on, but that one was the most notable for obvious reasons. Let’s dive in and see who may or may not have broke promises. The episode started with Aida getting ready to go into battle against the agents. She reminded us that she still had the real May locked away while an android May lurks in the base. The team realized quite quickly (after Aida tried to kill them) that something was very wrong. Everyone went into high alert as Aida sent her attack. This whole thing was a bit predictable, which was highlighted by Mack and Yo-Yo’s commentary. “The robots always attack," Mack stated before anything even happened. Throughout the whole episode, these two took over the comic relief role. “Hasn’t anyone ever seen an 80s robot movie?” My thoughts exactly. While that was happening, we caught back up with Senator Nadeer. She was just chilling in a mansion with her brother Vijay, aka the Inhuman, and Simmons got out of the cocoon. Nadeer believed her brother was Inhuman, so she decided to take him into the woods... and kill him. Apparently, they made some promise together that one would kill the other if they became Inhuman. Pretty weird pact if you ask me. At first Vijay didn’t show signs of being Inhuman, so she hesitated and, for a second, it seemed like she had a heart. Back at the base, Daisy was stepping up trying to get the Director to take action against the Watchdogs, but first he decided to figure out what was going on with the Inhuman Simmons freed (Vijay). They put two and two together and decided to track down Senator Nadeer. They arrived right after Vijay had revealed his powers (after Nadeer’s crew attempted to kill him... again). Nadeer acted like she was fine with him being Inhuman and even though Simmons protested, he got in a helicopter with his sister… who promptly shot him in the stomach. It was pretty shocking and showed just how far Senator Nadeer’s prejudices go. It was also revealed that she might be behind the whole Watchdogs organization. Something tells me she’s going to continue to cause trouble. In the meantime, the rest of the team was still trying to take down Aida, who infiltrated the base’s system. The whole thing was pretty terrifying. Robots really do have a lot of power when everything we own is based on computer systems, which is a scary thought. Eventually, they corner her and Mack chops her head clean off her shoulders, which was admittedly a pretty awesome scene. It was so sudden and a perfect end to Aida… or was it? That’s right, we haven’t seen the last of Aida yet. It turned out she was just a cover for Radcliffe, who was the real mastermind behind this. He decided he wanted to get the Darkhold to himself and tried to use Aida to get it. So it looks like he’ll be continuing that mission for a while with a new Aida and with android May on the inside. The only bright side of that is android May doesn’t seem to know what’s going on. She’s not helping Radcliffe, she’s just a copy of May and a good one at that. She kept saying things like she felt like she wasn’t in the right place. So she’s an innocent android bystander so far.

Final Thoughts:

• Overall it was a pretty good episode with the shocking murder of Nadeer’s brother and the reveal that Radcliffe was the real villain. It was pretty boring having Aida be the typical backlashing robot who just wants to be human, but with Radcliffe pulling the puppet strings, it made for a much more interesting storyline.
• It was sad to see a character with potential like Vijay die, but it really helped show just how serious Nadeer’s hate for Inhumans is, so I understand why it had to happen.
• I need Mack and Yo-Yo in every episode together. Their jokes and commentary of the situation were perfect.
• We’ll see if the team figures out that May has been replaced by an android next week when Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. returns.
