Calista Flockheart Returning to Supergirl in Reduced Role
When Season 2 of
Supergirl debuts this fall, you’ll be seeing a lot less of Cat Grant. That’s because the actress who portrays Kara’s silver-tongued boss, Calista Flockheart, will no longer be a series regular but will instead appear in a guest-starring capacity.
As for the reason Flockheart will be taking a reduced role, you can (to quote the
South Park song) blame Canada. Season 1 of
Supergirl was shot in Los Angeles, where the
Ally McBeal actress resides. However, with series production moving to Vancouver for Season 2, where the other CW superhero shows currently shoot, Flockheart elected not to move with it.
The second season of
Supergirl marks a period of transition for the fledgling series. In addition to moving to Vancouver in an effort to reduce costs on the show’s $3 million-per-episode budget, the series is also changing networks from CBS to The CW. One of the more popular and successful elements of last season was Flockheart, so it’s understandable that
Supergirl executive producer Andrew Kreisberg is excited to have her back, even in a reduced capacity.
“
Supergirl wouldn’t be
Supergirl without the amazing Calista Flockhart as Cat Grant,” said Kreisberg in a statement.” We are so excited Calista has agreed to continue on the show when she can. We and the audience love to see her on screen.”
Along with the return of Cat Grant,
Supergirl fans will be treated to other notable guest stars, including Tyler Hoechlin as Kara’s cousin, Superman. Season 2 of
Supergirl premieres on The CW on October 10.
