Walking Dead’s Benedict Samuel Moves to Gotham
Season 3 of Fox’s
Gotham will introduce another member of Batman’s famed rogue’s gallery: Jervis Tetch, aka the Mad Hatter. As reported by TVLine, Benedict Samuel of
Walking Dead fame will play the
Alice in Wonderland themed villain when
Gotham returns in September 2016.
According to Fox, Samuel will portray Tetch as “a talented hypnotist teetering on the edge of madness. He arrives in Gotham with an unwavering desire to find his sister, Alice, a young woman who went missing in the city years ago. It is anyone’s guess just how far down the rabbit hole he’s willing to go in order to find her.”
Created by DC Comics creators Bill Finger and Lew Sayre Schwartz in 1948, the Mad Hatter has been a consistent (if inconsistently defined) Batman antagonist throughout the years. He is usually depicted as wearing a green top hat and overcoat, in the style of the Lewis Carroll "Mad Hatter," who uses mind-controlling devices on his victims. The introduction of a sister named Alice is a new wrinkle in the backstory of Jervis Tetch, so we’ll have to wait and see how closely the Mad Hatter in
Gotham will resemble the comic book version.
Following on the heels of Season 2 of
Gotham—a season that was subtitled “Rise of the Villains”—Season 3 promises to bring on even more baddies. In addition to the Mad Hatter, established Batman rogues like the Tweedle brothers, the Court of Owls and Solomon Grundy will make appearances. Season 3 will also feature a new actress in the role of Poison Ivy, Maggie Geha, and Jamie Chung as Valerie Vale.
