The Leftovers Renewed For a Third and Final Season

Following
The Leftovers Season 2 finale last Sunday, President of
HBO Programming Michael Lombardo has announced that the series will return for a third and final season.

Created by Damon Lindelof and Tom Perrotta, and largely based on Perrotta’s novel of the same name,
The Leftovers chronicles what happens three years after the Sudden Departure, a Rapture-like event in which 140 million people suddenly disappeared from earth. The series experienced a creative rebirth in Season 2, which saw the series diverge from its source material when only some of Season 1’s characters moved to a town in Texas nicknamed “Miracle,” a place from which no one “departed.”
On the renewal, Lindelof had this to say: “I have never, ever experienced the level of creative support and trust that I have received from HBO during the last two seasons of
The Leftovers. Tom, myself and our incredible team of writers and producers put tremendous care into designing those seasons as novels unto themselves…with beginnings, middles and ends. As we finished our most recent season, it became clear to us that the series as a whole was following the same model…and with our beginning and middle complete, the most exciting thing for us as storytellers would be to bring
The Leftovers to a definitive end.”
The Leftovers has always been a series I was interested in checking out, but never got around to. Despite hearing about the show’s increase in quality in Season 2, the series continues to be divisive – and I already don’t have much luck with series that are universally praised (read:
Daredevil). For fans of the series, are you happy Lindelof and Perrotta will be able to finish telling their story? Or should they have concluded the show with Season 2?
