Avengers Vs. X-men #1 Review

The big story arc of the year for Marvel has finally arrived. I was not very excited for this story arc because sometimes if you hype things up too much they can end up being disappointing. And we all know that Avengers Vs. X-men has been hyped for months now.

The cover for this issue got me a little excited for the issue. It looked kind of epic to see the whole Avengers and X-men team get ready to fight each other. I also really enjoyed the art for the cover. It was disappointing that the art for the cover was not the same as the interior art.

In this issue the Avengers team finds out that phoenix force is back. They know how much of a danger that the phoenix force may bring so the Avengers are going to do everything in their power to stop it. Cyclops wants the opposite. He thinks the phoenix force will save the mutant race so he wants to embrace it.

I thought the story for this issue was much better than I expected. The phoenix force can be a very interesting story to play with in this story arc. The one thing I am worried about is that they are going to stray away from that as the story continues and just concentrate on the fights between certain Avengers and X-men members. One of the big mistakes for Fear Itself was that it never concentrated on story and concentrated too much on fighting. I hope Marvel learns from its mistakes for this story arc.

Something I was very disappointed with in this issue was that nothing really big happened. Nothing made me excited to pick up the next issue. The first issue should lore you into the story arc, and this issue failed to do that.

The art for this issue was probably the worst part of this issue. I am not a big fan of John Romita’ Jr. I only like his art for Kick Ass, but his art for Avengers does not really fit the characters. It is very bulgy and does not allow us to enjoy the story. We should of gotten better art for a big story arc like Avengers Vs. X-men. I hope we get better artists for upcoming issues.

Even though this issue was not the best. I still see potential for this story arc, which is more than I can say about Fear Itself. I say skip this issue and wait for the next issue. You may enjoy issue 0 more than issue 1.
