Christopher Nolan’s “Memento” remake Confirmed
"AMBI Pictures has confirmed remake after purchasing rights to the cult thriller."
Christopher Nolan’s 2000 thriller,
Memento, has been greenlit for a remake only 15 years after its original release, according to the
Hollywood Reporter.
AMBI pictures acquired the rights after purchasing the library of Exclusive Media Group, whose titles include
Cruel Intentions,
Donnie Darko, and
End of Watch. AMBI announced a $200 million dollar film fund last week, used to finance movies in the $25 and $30 million dollar range.
Adapted from a short story written by Nolan’s brother, Jonathan Nolan, the movie stars Guy Pearce as a tattooed man who is suffering from a unique form of memory loss, but still sets out to find his wife’s killer. Because of his short term memory loss, the only clues used for Pearce’s frantic search are hand-written notes, Polaroid pictures, and pieces of information tattooed onto his body. Memento’s story is told in two different timelines, one which ran backwards in color and one that ran forwards in black and white.
Memento received Academy Award nominations for best screenplay and best editing. The film, also starring Carrie-Anne Moss and Joe Pantoliano, grossed a disappointing $25.5 million dollars at the US domestic box office, but has developed a strong cult following since its release.
As of now, there have been no casting decisions made or release date set.
